Larry Clifton Mounger, age 82, passed away Sunday August 4, 2024. Born September 8, 1941, in Madera California to Inez Irene Wheeler and Millard Clifton Mounger, Larry saw many different places growing up before the family settled in Alton Missouri. Immediately after graduating high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and while stationed at Cannon Air Force Base in Clovis New Mexico he met his wife Margaret Valdez with whom he would spend the next 59 years. His service included several tours overseas including Vietnam. Larry would eventually be stationed at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque where he would find some of his most enduring friendships while at the NCO Academy. Following his retirement from the military, Larry embarked on a second career teaching at TVI as well as earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Education. Larry enjoyed all things outdoors including hiking, biking, show-shoeing and riding his motorcycle. He participated in many groups that shared these hobbies well into his senior years. Larry was also very attentive to his beautiful yard and would spend countless hours tending to it knowing how much joy it brought to his wife. A true friend to many, he was always ready to help others and could be counted on in times of need.
He is survived by his wife Margaret, sons James Edward (Dusty) and Clayton Paul Mounger, daughter-in-law Michelle Ann Mounger, granddaughters Dayna Michelle Mounger and Amy Jo Feagans (Rob), great grandsons Graham Anthony Feagans and Jude Arthur Mounger. He is also survived by brothers Roger Mounger (Karen), Lonnie Roy Mounger (Dolores), sister Teresa Deckard (James) and cherished aunt Neva Jo Heckard.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents Inez Irene Wheeler and Millard Clifton Mounger, sisters Joyce Rene Harris, Joann Ferguson and Mary Ellen Cantrell.
The family would like to express thanks to the staff at Sandia Vista Fountain Hill and Roadrunner Hospice for the care and compassion they gave Larry in his final days.
Visitation will be held Thursday, August 22, 2024, at 10:00 am, followed by a Memorial Service at 10:30 am, at French Funerals Westside Chapel. A graveside service will take place at Santa Fe National Cemetery on Thursday, August 22, 2024, at 1:30 pm.
