Larry Dean Osborn peacefully passed away on the morning of December 15, 2024. Born May 22, 1947 in Galesburg, Illinois, to parents Marjorie and Lloyd Osborn, he was 77 years old.
Larry was a loving husband, father, and grandfather (Papa). He is survived by many family members including his beloved wife Cheryl; daughter Nicole and son-in-law Chris; step daughters Shannon and Shanna; granddaughters Bella, Caterina, Jocelyn, and Jasmine; and grandson Eddie. He is also survived by his brothers Gary and Dan, and their beautiful families.
His greatest joy in life came from spending time with family and sharing his love of the outdoors with them whenever possible, including camping with his wife and fishing with his grandkids. Anyone who knew Larry was well aware that he loved the outdoors, especially flyfishing. His fishing trips were never about catching the biggest fish, he was skilled at catching fish and often released them back into the water. This, of course, became the source of a running joke that he really didn’t catch any fish, to which he would smile and continually increase the number or size of the fish in his story. For Larry, fishing was a time to be alone in the peace and tranquility of the great outdoors. In addition to his pastimes, in his retirement Larry also served as a member of the Patriot Guard Riders of Colorado. He loved his country and his fellow countrymen. He was a tremendous support to families in their times of grief and always thanked surviving veterans for their service.
Larry had a number of adventures throughout his lifetime, though many in his life never knew this due to his profound humility. The best memories of his youth came from his family’s time in Italy. As a U.S. Navy family, the Osborns lived in Naples, Italy for a couple of years. The people and the culture of Italy captured Larry’s heart, and he always talked about wanting to return there someday. Prior to his high school graduation, Larry, and his twin brother Gary joined the U.S. Navy. Larry’s first job out of the military was working with NASA in Washington, D.C. Space and the vast unknown universe was always a fascination of his. While with NASA, he helped to track multiple Apollo missions, including Apollo 11. By far the most fun and perhaps unexpected job he did was working as a ski instructor at Loveland Ski Resort. An avid skier himself, Larry loved teaching kids, including his own daughter at the age of 3, to ski. Not one to sit around, Larry often had multiple jobs, but his main career was in computers. In the final iteration of a multi-decade career as a computer programmer, Larry retired from Lockheed Martin.
To know Larry was a true gift. His care and concern for others could be seen in everything he did. He will be greatly missed.
