Larry Phillips Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Ammen Family Cremation & Funeral Care - Melbourne on Dec. 1, 2025.
Larry Joseph Phillips, AKA Flip-Flop, passed at 12 noon on November 5, 2025, at Cape Canaveral Hospital Hospice: following a long battle with cancer.

Joe was born in Macon Georgia on December 5, 1947, to E.W and Ruth Priest Phillips and was raised in Cocoa Beach Florida. He remembered his mother driving him and other children to the ferry so they could attend elementary school in Cocoa. He was also a member of the first graduating class of Cocoa Beach High School. Instead of becoming a professional skier at Cypress Gardens or accompanying his surfing buddies to South America, Joe was drafted.

After surviving a roadside bombing while in Vietnam, Joe came home to become a contractor, specializing in steel buildings in North Florida; and later became a boat mechanic at Keels and Wheels in Melbourne. Upon retiring he was active in A.P.B.A, serving as co-president for a time and owning a tunnel-hull boat driven by Bill Hamill and later, Brian Brubaker. Joining the D.A.V Rocket Post, Joe enjoyed time with the other veterans, playing poker and shooting pool; he also cooked steaks once a month at the posts fundraiser.

Survivors include, wife Jan and two stepsons Scott and Darren Longmuir; daughter Susan Perry and two grandsons Jay Perry, wife Marianne, and great grandson JP, grandson Andrew Perry, wife Theresa and two great grandchildren Anna Bella & AJ; Daughter Lisa Bowman, husband Fred, and three grandchildren Sean and wife Faith, Zachary and Kelly; daughter Rhonda Glisson, husband Jeff and one granddaughter Sierra.

One statement both daughters have made is,

"HE WAS LARGER THAN LIFE!"

Meaning that no matter what was broken, from a screen door to a broken heart,

Dad knew exactly how to fix it!

God-speed Honey!
