Larry Shoemaker Obituary Larry D Shoemaker, age 87, of Faulkton, SD, died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2024, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Funeral service will be 11 am, Sat., Aug. 31, 2024, at the Willoughby Funeral Home in Howard. Burial with Military Honors will be at the Winfred Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour preceding the service at the funeral home.
Larry Dean Shoemaker was born February 21, 1937, to Clem and Alice (Miller) Shoemaker on the farm near Winfred, SD. After finishing school, he went on to join the National Guard in 1955. Larry worked at John Morrell in Sioux Falls and Madison, Production Credit, and various military positions with the National Guard until his retirement in the late 1990's. He was also self-employed and was owner/operator of the Circle S Motel in Hill City, SD, The Donut Barn in Brookings, SD, and the Home Cafe in Adrian, MN. Larry married Joyce Clites in 1956 and from that union three children, Wendy, Penny, and Leon, were born. In February 1992, he married Sheryl Cordes. Larry and Cheryl traveled in their RV to Nevada and Arizona and made many friends there. After Sheryl's death in 2011, he lived in Nevada and later moved to Prescott, AZ. In 2019, Larry moved to the Black Hills of South Dakota until December 2022 when he moved to Faulkton Senior Living. During his lifetime, Larry loved to hunt, fish, pan gold, garden, travel, coin collecting and attending yard sales. He served on various boards and committees wherever he lived. "A stranger is just a friend I haven't met yet". He loved people!
Larry is survived by his children: Wendy (Patrick) Shields of Faulkton, SD, Penny Tolrud of Sturgis, SD and Leon (Janee) Shoemaker of Belgrade, MT; 9 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; 3 stepchildren: Aaron Cordes (Doreen Evans) of San Luis, CO, Michelle (John) Malinowski of Loveland, CO, and Nichole Cordes of Las Vegas, NV; 4 step grandchildren and 2 step great Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Sheryl Shoemaker, his sister, Bonnie Lentsch and his brother, Robert Shoemaker.
