Larry Gene Walter, age 85. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, August 8, 2025, at Iles Westover Chapel in Des Moines, IA where friends may call beginning at noon. Burial will follow at the Glendale Cemetery.
Larry passed away on Sunday, August 3, 2025, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines.
Larry was the only child of Orie William and Dorothy Maria (Payton) Walter, born August 2, 1940, on a small farm east of Kellerton, lowa. He graduated from Kellerton High School in 1958 and attended for 2 years at Northwest Missouri State College in Maryville, Mo. On a blind date March 7, 1964, Larry met the love of his life, and soul mate Katharine Faye Stoecker. Love evolved quickly from that blind date. They became engaged on April 8, 1964, and were married August 2, 1964. Kathy and Larry were blessed with two daughters, Michelle, and Deanna.
Larry was employed at Look Magazine for 6 years as a supervisor until he left to join Massey Ferguson. He joined Massey Ferguson when the company first came to Des Moines and was a supervisor in the factory offices for 15 years until the factory closed. He then moved into their head offices, where he was the Obsolescence Control Manager for the US and Canada for 12 years until Massey Ferguson was bought out. He worked a total of years with Massey. After Massey, he then joined Wells Fargo, where he enjoyed 13 years in the home mortgage payoff department before retiring. Larry thoroughly enjoyed his time at Wells Fargo and was instrumental in working with programmers to develop an automated payoff system. After retirement, Larry and Kathy were able to go on several bus tours, East, West, North, and South. Their true enjoyment came from spending a few years in Arizona during the winter months before Kathy passed away.
Larry enjoyed woodworking, antiquing, playing cards, miniature golf, pitching horseshoes, and shooting hoops. He loved playing "Horse" and "Around the World" with his wife, daughters, and grandsons. He enjoyed watching baseball, football, and basketball. Larry spent time helping his daughter and son-in-law at their Alpaca farm and fiber mill near Maxwell. He was always involved in helping with the annual Alpaca shearing, and the annual Alpaca open house days.
Larry was preceded in death by his loving wife Kathy, his parents, two brothers-in-law, Robert and Carlisle Stoecker, and a sister-in-law, Mary Louise Stoecker, great-granddaughter Isley Dell Ballentine.
He is survived by his two daughters, Michelle (Christian) Davies, Deanna Walter, two grandsons, Brennon (Shaylene) Ballentine), Braxton Ballentine, and two loving great granddaughters, Iris and Ivy Ballentine, brother-in-law Larry (Mary Etta) Stoecker, and sister-in-law Rita Stoecker. nieces, nephews, and cousins.
