Laura Katherine Scott, lovingly known as "Kathy," passed away peacefully on August 28, 2025, at Saint Anthony's Hospital in downtown Oklahoma City. Born on August 22, 1958, at OU Medical Hospital, Kathy's life was a radiant testament to quiet strength, deep compassion, and unwavering love-for her family, her friends, and her faith.
Kathy was the beloved daughter of Bernecie and Albert Speers, and a cherished sister to Inez, Sam, J.D., AC Jr., and David "Dairl" Speers. She is survived by her loving husband, William "Bill" Scott, and her devoted children: Kristy Rushing, Sheila Bertelson, James Scott, Valarie Scott, and Albie Scott. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren-Journie, Justin, Rebekah, Tracy, Roxanna, Aiden, Xaivier, Jeremiah, Malachi, and Bentley-and her great-granddaughter Kynslee Jane, with another great-grandchild on the way. She is also survived by her sisters Freda, Norma, Reba, and Marcia. Kathy was also loved and cherished by her brother-in-law Kendall and his wife Julia; sisters-in-law Peggy, Bessie, Ruth "Gauchee," Corene, and Lana Jo; as well as Joe Fish and the entire Fish family.
Her family was her greatest joy. Her love for each of them was deep, enduring, and unconditional. She was the rock of the family-the one everyone turned to for strength, comfort, and truth.
Kathy's life was rooted in resilience, humility, and care. A proud Oklahoman, she held her roots close and found joy in the everyday-tending her garden, baking with love, watching Hallmark and Lifetime movies, and quietly delighting in cross word puzzles. She found peace in simple, grounding rituals, and though she only grafted a tree once-with her cousin Albert Dale Thomas-it became a lasting symbol that strength grows through connection.
Her love for cooking, especially baking, reflected the comfort she found in the rhythm of daily life. She especially cherished preparing meals during the holidays, when the kitchen became a place of reunion and warmth. Her food wasn't just nourishment; it was love served on every plate, a quiet way of saying, "You belong here."
Kathy's gift for nurturing others was unmistakable. Whether guiding her own children or offering comfort to those who simply needed a safe place to land, she was a steady presence-a "house mom" in every sense, whose warmth and wisdom left lasting imprints on the hearts around her. She loved with her whole heart-fiercely, deeply, and without hesitation. When she believed someone needed her wisdom, she didn't hold back. Her guidance could be intense, even overwhelming at times, but it always came from a place of deep care. She never told you what you wanted to hear-she told you what you needed to hear, with honesty, conviction, and a heart full of love.
A Poem for Kathy
This poem was Kathy's favorite-an enduring reminder that through every joy and sorrow, the Lord never left her side. She believed with all her heart that in life's most difficult moments, she was being carried. It was more than a belief; it was a truth she lived by and lovingly passed on to her children. Whenever life felt overwhelming, she reminded them: God will always be there to carry you through. Her faith was steady, her trust unwavering, and her message clear-no matter how heavy the burden, you are never alone.
In her final days, Kathy "Momma" found comfort and strength in the deep knowing that God had never left her-that He had carried her through every hardship, every sorrow, every silent struggle. With that belief came peace. She rested in the assurance of her love and faith in the Lord, and in the gentle promise that she would soon be going home to heaven.
Footprints in the Sand
by Carolyn Carty (1963)
One night a man had a dream.
He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord.
Across the sky flashed scenes from his life.
For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand:
one belonging to him, and the other to the Lord.
When the last scene of his life flashed before him,
he looked back at the footprints in the sand.
He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints.
He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life.
This really bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it.
"Lord, You said that once I decided to follow you,
You'd walk with me all the way.
But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life,
there is only one set of footprints.
I don't understand why, when I needed you most, you would leave me."
The Lord replied,
"My son, My precious child, I love you and I would never leave you.
During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints,
it was then that I carried you."
Kathy "Momma" will be laid to rest at Muse Cemetery in LeFlore County, Oklahoma-a place close to her heart, nestled between Big Cedar and Whitesboro, just behind the Muse Post Office off Highway 63. It is a peaceful resting place beside her beloved momma and daddy-a place that echoes her lifelong love for "going down home" to Talihina, where her spirit was always most free.
We will miss you deeply, Kathy-our beloved Momma-but we find comfort in knowing you are now our angel, watching over us with love and light from above.
