Laurence Larry Rubin

Born August 13, 1931 in Waterbury, CT; passed April 6, 2025, in Hingham, MA
Larry passed away peacefully and on his own terms, just as he lived his life. Following a three-
year childhood battle with osteomyelitis, which left his lower body mostly immobile, he went on
to lead in his words a 98% normal life. Larry never wanted (and rarely accepted) special
treatment from anyone. After graduating from Norwich Free Academy in 1949, he attended
Boston University for a year before returning home to Connecticut after a fire destroyed the
family business. He earned his bachelors degree from UConn and a masters degree from the
University of Tennessee, taught high school and college math in Hartford, and then spent almost
20 years as a math professor at Nashville State Technical Institute, where he co-authored a
textbook on computer programming in the early 1980s. He was a serial hobbyist, at various
times developing his own photos, homebrewing beer, roasting coffee beans, baking bread and
biscotti, woodworking, and fidgeting around with stuff, especially computers and Photoshop.
He enjoyed a long and active retirement with his wife, Virginia, with whom he shared many
decades of friends, family, photography, classical music and travel. He especially treasured the
two winter months they spent at the Riverside Club in Marco Island, FL, and the lasting
friendships and memories they made there. Larry moved from Nashville to Hingham, MA, after
Virginias passing in 2016, where he enthusiastically embraced his Linden Ponds experience,
making new friends and becoming an active member of the vibrant community, including the
photography club, lifelong learning, and the welcoming committee. His loving, adventurous, and
joyful relationship with Frayda Abramson made this final chapter of his life complete.
Larry was predeceased by his father Abe, mother Frances, brother Howard, and wife Virginia,
and is survived and missed by his daughter Ellen and her husband Dan Scanlan, his
granddaughters Sophie and Charlotte Scanlan, his nephew Lee Rubin, his first wife Mary Park
Hausman, and his close companion Frayda Abramson. A celebration of life will be held at a later
