Laverne N. Bretl, age 97, of Two Rivers passed away on Thursday, October 17, 2024.
Laverne was born August 28, 1927 in Brussels, WI (Door County), daughter of the late Frank and Emily (Rankin) Vandertie. She was united in marriage to Norbert Bretl on November 16, 1943 at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Brussels. He preceded her in death on May 27, 1988.
Laverne grew up in a large farm family near Forestville and learned hard work early. She loved her various jobs and friends met during the years working in Two Rivers
The young couple farmed east of Maplewood before moving to Algoma. They then moved to Two Rivers in 1960 where Laverne found employment with Paragon Corporation, retiring after 32 years of service. She then worked at Sentry grocery store for 10 years. Laverne was a volunteer for over 20 years at St. Vincent DePaul in Two Rivers and a member since 1960 of St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church.
Survivors include her children: Allan (Jane) Bretl, Toledo, OH; Loren (Marcia) Bretl, Ft. Atkinson; Jean Spanbauer (Timothy J. Kelly), Oshkosh; ten grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; three sisters: Marion Tanck, Door County; Mildred Denil, Forestville; Jeanette Fenendael, Casco; sisters-in-law: Shirley Vandertie, Green Bay; Judy Vandertie, Forestville; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Laverne was preceded in death by her parents Frank & Emily Vandertie, one son Greg Bretl, one grandson David Lee Bretl, one sister Bernice Walter and eight brothers: Richard, Raymond, Alvin, Lindy, Frank, Jr., Wilbur, Roy and Norbert; three brothers-in-law: Bob Tanck, Walter Denil and Algie Fenendael.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 23, 2024 at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Dave Pleier with burial to take place at Holy Cross cemetery, Two Rivers following the service.
The family will greet relatives and friends at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the services at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 23, 2023

The Lakeshore Family Funeral Homes, Klein & Stangel location is assisting the Bretl family with arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Laverne's name may be sent to St. Vincent DePaul or the Cancer Society.
The family wishes to extend a special Thank You to Dr. Yetter and his staff for years of medical service and caring as well as Aurora at Home Hospice for the comfort and compassion shown to Laverne and her family in her final days.
