NEWPORT – Lawrence L. "Larry" Cook, 94, of Harris Avenue, passed away on February 6, 2024 at Alpine Rehab & Nursing Center. Little Falls.
Mr. Cook was born on January 11, 1930 in Herkimer, a son of the late George and Dorothy (Blackman) Cook. He received his education from West Canada Valley Schools. In 1951, he entered the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1953 at the rank of Sergeant. Following his return from Korea, he founded Cook Fence Construction Company. On August 15, 1953, Lawrence was united in marriage with the former Jane Pogonowski at St. John's Church, Newport. Jane preceded him in death on March 23, 1993. Larry retired later that year after 40 plus years in the industry.
Larry was a hard working self-made man who ran a successful chain link fencing business. With all of those responsibilities he still continued to enjoy time with his family. He was an avid golfer, snowmobiler and hunter. He especially loved spending time at his hunting camp for deer season, snowmobiling and fishing. When his children were younger, the family spent much time camping and boating in the Adirondacks. He was a soft spoken man full of wisdom. He was admired and respected by family and friends and will be greatly missed.
Survivors include two children, Wayne Cook of the home residence, and Diane Cook of Newport; a brother, Jack (Patricia) Cook of Cleveland; a grandson, Dustin (Katie) Cook of Conroe, TX; two great-granddaughters, Zoe and Aria Cook; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Jane, Lawrence was predeceased by two brothers, Paul and Harold Cook; and a sister, Eleanor Miller.
There will be no public services. Spring Interment will take place in St. John's Cemetery where Military Honors will be conferred by the U.S. Army Honor Guard. Arrangements are entrusted to the Autenrith Funeral Home, Newport.
