Lawrence D. Fossett, 67, died November 22, 2021 at his home in Tinton Falls, New Jersey. Larry was born in Gainesville, Florida and raised in suburban Atlanta. He earned an honors degree in mathematics from Oberlin College and a PhD in operations research from Stanford University. He was retired from a lengthy career at Bell Labs and AT&T, where he earned awards for his work.

Larry was an avid traveler. He traveled up and down the East Coast for holidays and other family events, and took multiple trips to Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Southeast Asia, and Japan. He had a huge collection of T-shirts from bars all over the world that he garnered in his travels. In his younger days, he was a serious student of karate, earning the rank of third-degree black belt. He was also a Sudoku player and a successful amateur investor.

Larry never married and had no children, but he was much loved by his immediate family and two extended families as a son, brother, cousin and particularly an uncle. He visited at holidays and family events, came to soccer games, orchestra concerts, graduations and weddings; and enthusiastically played multiple board games. He is survived by a brother James Fossett and his companion Bess Epstein of Delmar, New York and a nephew, Jeffrey Fossett of Boston. He is also survived by two extended families. An extended family by marriage includes de facto cousins Sheila (Perloff) Eddison of Mt.Desert, Maine and Linda Perloff of Key Largo, Florida; Karin and David Shields, Andrea Snyder, Temi Snyder of suburban New York City and "bonus" nieces and nephews Sara Eddison Wyatt, Melissa Hickey, and Joshua and Zander Bolgar. A second "bonus" family includes mother Kay Hamrick of Atlanta; sisters and brother in laws Mimi and Gordon Brown of Tinton Falls and Kit and George Veal of Raleigh North Carolina; nephews Joshua (Larry's godson), Andrew, and Erik Brown; and niece and son-in-law Kathleen and Raul Llorente. Larry was pre-deceased by his parents, sister-in-law Janet Perloff Fossett, and his "bonus" dad, Gordon Hamrick, Jr

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, you can honor Larry by making a contribution to the Janet D. Perloff Scholarship at https://www.albany.edu/giving/perloff or send a check by mail. Larry contributed to this fund, which is named for his late sister in law and supports scholarships to social work and public health students at the University at Albany. Please make check payable to The UAlbany Foundation, note your gift is to the Perloff Scholarship in memory of Larry Fossett, and mail to The UAlbany Foundation, PO Box 761, Albany, NY 12 201.
