Lawrence Johnson Obituary

Lawrence "Larry" D. Johnson, 86, passed away peacefully at home on July 18, 2025. He was born February 24, 1939 in Rockford to Harry and Violet (Johnson) Johnson.

Larry graduated from Rockford East High School in 1959 and married his beloved wife, Darlene Cevene, on June 25, 1960 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Rockford. He worked as an engineer at National Lock's Rockford Airport plant for over 30 years.

An avid aviation enthusiast, Larry was a private pilot for more than 50 years and was a member of the Blackhawk Flying Club. He built two homes, could fix anything, and enjoyed camping with Darlene. He was a member of the Thunderbird Squares and Blackhawk Crosstrailers Square Dance clubs for over 20 years. He loved going to car shows-especially showing his 1964 Thunderbird.

Larry is survived by his wife Darlene; daughters Cheri (James) DeVlieger and Kathryn (Scott) Dewey; grandchildren Amanda (Josh) Griffeth, Brad (Eliza) DeVlieger, Rachel (Donald) Shaner, Sarah (Evan Palm) DeVlieger, Cory Dewey, and Summer Dewey; great-grandchildren Easton, Riley, Jace, Noah, Zander, Cole, Ashton, and Axel; brother Frederick Keith Johnson; honorary family Darlene and Larry Sparks and family; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Tom Johnson and Terrell Johnson.

Memorial Services will be held at 4:00 pm. on Friday, July 25, 2025 at Fred C. Olson Chapel, 1001 Second Avenue, Rockford, IL 61104. Visitation prior from 3:00 pm. to 3:45 pm. at the funeral home.
