Lawrence Eugene Josey 1958- 2025

Lawrence Eugene Josey-affectionately known as Butch, Larry, Joe, and Doc-was born in 1958 in San Felipe, Texas, to the late Lucious and Frances McDonald Josey, Sr. He grew up working alongside his family, picking cotton on various farms throughout the region, and was a proud member of Downey Chapel United Methodist Church in San Felipe, Texas.

A standout student, Lawrence was approached by the FBI during his senior year at Sealy High School, from which he graduated in 1976. Instead, he chose to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Air Force, where he embarked on a 23-year career marked by honor, intelligence, and global adventure.

His military journey began at Bentwaters A.F.B. in Suffolk, England, where he met the love of his life, Caroline Matthews, in August 1977. The two were married in Ipswich on April 18, 1980, and together they created a life full of movement, growth, and shared purpose. Their daughter Stacy was born in 1983 while they were stationed at Spangdahlem A.F.B. in Germany. The family later lived in Edzell, Scotland, and at Patrick A.F.B. in Florida, among other postings, including Kansas and California.

Joe was known for his sharp mind, quick wit, and unmatched gift for storytelling. He had a deep love for travel and always carried his Texan spirit and humor with him, no matter where he was in the world. Even in his most difficult moments, he met life with courage, resilience, and grace-always able to find humor and light, even in the darkest times.

A complex man, Joe was defined by both strength and vulnerability. Those who truly knew him will remember him with respect, empathy, and deep love. His intelligence, warmth, and unwavering loyalty left a lasting impression on everyone whose life he touched.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lucious and Frances McDonald Josey, his sisters Verlee Josey, Luctria McMillian, and Kathy Josey, and his brothers Artlee Josey and George McDonald.

Lawrence is survived by his daughter Stacy and stepdaughter Sharon Matthews; granddaughters Sherene and Ellie; his sister Ruby (Sammy) Miller; his brothers Lucious, Robert, and Charles Josey; and a wide circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. He will be missed more than words can express, especially the ones we never got to say.
