Lawrence Solomon

The Solomon family announces the unexpected death of Larry, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and beloved master to a long lineage of bird dogs who sprung to his whistle and slept by his feet. Larry died peacefully on his 84th birthday surrounded by his cherished American and British family.

Larry was born in Brooklyn, New York on April 9, 1938, the son of Robert and Miriam Solomon. He loved anything to do with the outdoors. At a very young age he taught himself to fish with a stick and a string. His father taught him how to play golf leading Larry to Junior competitions and the golf team at the University of Miami. He served in the army in the Korean War cherishing American freedoms his entire life. His long career as a meticulous financial planner ended with clients becoming friends.

Fly-fishing was just one of his many outdoor passions, and he would not hesitate to journey near and far to challenge his expertise. After years of careful observation and experimentation on the river, he co-authored The Caddis and the Angler, the first book ever written about caddis flies and created the Delta Wing concept for tying caddis imitations. After another book he was inducted into the Catskill Fly Fishing Center Hall of Fame. He hunted regularly with friends, enjoyed cross-country skiing, and was the men's golf club champion at the Warwick Valley Country Club where he played for 31 years. Larry loved to dance salsa, play the conga drums, and listen to chamber music. He learned to paint recently, but not because he was slowing down. Friends said Larry loved life­­­ and was a multi-faceted lifelong friend who is already deeply missed. Larry was passionate about his many activities and intentionally worked daily to stay in shape both in his gym and in his beautiful garden. A garden in which he took great pride together with his wonderful wife Rose.

Larry anticipated spoiling his young grandchildren with presents on his birthday, breaking in a new custom set of clubs, flying to yet another exotic fishing destination, and dancing at his nephew's upcoming wedding. He voiced his hope for many more good years ahead to have the opportunity to teach his grandchildren just some of what he knew before he grew old.

Larry is survived by his wife of 38 years Rosemary Solomon (née Samuels), daughter Lauren Solomon-Politi and her husband Michael Politi of Manhattan, granddaughter London Rose, grandson Aston Lawrence along with a nephew Peter Granat of Lone Tree, Colorado. He is pre-deceased by his half-sister Betty Granat of Modesto, California and brother-in-law John Leigh of Sunningdale, England. Other survivors include his sister-in-law Jennifer Leigh, niece Samantha Leigh and nephew Simon Leigh all residing in the area near London, England.

A formal celebration of life at the Mulder Chapel in Warwick will take place next spring.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to Trout Unlimited which helps protect fish habitat for future generations.
