Lawrence Darwin Weigle
Larry was born to Darwin and Elizabeth Weigle on January 20, 1950, and died on October 17, 2024.
Larry liked to put things in his own words, so he wrote his own obituary.
"I sometimes wonder why my life was so full of good fortune. I grew up with parents and an extended family that nurtured me with unconditional support and love. I worked thirty-five years in the Akron Public Schools surrounded by students and colleagues about whom I cared and who cared about me. Since leaving Akron schools, my life has been blessed by a plethora of wonderful students at The University of Akron. I have had many friends but no two greater ones than Jim Cahoon and Katrina Halasa. My daughter, Katie, brings joy and pride that I will not even attempt to put into words. I hold close to my heart Katie's partner, Sam Creasey, and know that they will live a long happy life together. Julie, my beautiful wife and true partner, made our life together a joy. I am not the easiest person with whom to live, so her devotion and perseverance made me feel safe and loved.
I do not want any calling hours or services. I do not have any place that I would like you to send money. That being said, I do have a request. Try to keep a smile on your face and find the good in people. Thank you for allowing me to share my final thoughts with you."
______________________________________________________________
Katie wanted to add a few things: My father loved to stay and watch the credits at the end of a movie, so I hope he will not begrudge me a few words now. I want to express my heartfelt thank you on behalf of my father and myself to:
The staff at Davita Dialysis Twinsburg, who treated Dad like family.
The staff at the Akron Children's Hospital Burn Unit, in particular Megan, Dr. Deepak Ozhathil, and the many volunteers, who work so hard to help people find joy in a challenging time.
The staff at Double Shot Coffee brought my dad joy and coffee and comforted me during the hardest time of my life.
Dr. Rupesh Raina, who went above and beyond for my dad.
Marie Hickey CNP, looked after my parents for many years and brought my father peace when needed.
The Zox Family, The Hamspas Family, The McMullen Family, and the entire Halasa Family
Aldo and Gabrialla showed me that even when things are hard - people are good.
Onadell, my gypsy mama, who has taken care of me all my life and has given me extra special care over this time. I'm so lucky to have a bonus parent.
Coach, who showed up when I needed him most and made my dad smile when he needed it most.
Katrina, who did not leave my side.
All of the staff at the Justin T. Rodgers Hospice Center gave my father and me safety and peace when we needed it most. Your commitment to providing quality of life is inspiring.
My father is my favorite person. If you could be so kind, smile for him. There will be a celebration of life for both of my parents on Monday, November 4th from 4-8 at Sarah's Vineyard, 1204 W Steels Corners Rd, Cuyahoga Falls, OH.

APS has lost two great educators who were amazing principals and dedicated to both their students and their staffs' well-being this month. I gratefully remember Fred Schuett and Larry Weigle working together hanging cabinets on a weekend to remodel a Garfield classroom for use as a kitchen for the teaching of occupational orientation classes to students with IEPs. Giving above and beyond - what a wonderful way to support teachers in their quest to meet student needs.
Thank you for being a blessing . Jean Hamed

Mr. Weigle helped so many students and always had a cheerful smile. What a great man, so sorry for your loss.

I was a student at Kenmore High School when Mr. Weigle was our principal. He was a well respected man in our building. He was easy to talk to when you had a problem and stern when he had to be with you. Even though he was not at our school long, he made a huge impact on a lot of students while he was there that left a great last impression. I have been fortunate to run into Mr. Weigle over the years in public, at the University of Akron or with friends at other schools he was working at in the APS district. He may not have always remembered my name but remembered my face as a student and was always happy to hear how I was doing in life. The world has lost a great man but the heavens has gained an even great man. My condolences.

Walking into his class at UA each and every day made me smile - he definitely knew how to cultivate an aura of love and kindness. I miss him dearly!

Mr. Weigle, saved me from multiple paddles from Mr. Haynes at Buchtel and provided a great example of true servant leadership when I started in administration in APS. So sorry to hear this. Holko, Weigle, Haynes, Buckner, Mrs. Lewis made a heck of a BHS team. Sandy Womack

When I was a young educator in Akron Public Schools, it was Larry who touch my shoulder and motivated me to start doing more leadership components within the district. In fact, he nominated me to the local TV station to be featured as an up and coming educator of color. He then suggested that I become the teacher representative for students who were referred to student services. I asked him why did he select me and he said he wanted someone who truly cared about students. Larry truly cared about his students! It didn´t matter their race or economic background he wanted the best for them! If you went against any of his students you had to go through him to get them, he was a Huge protector of them! Whenever I reflect about Larry, I think of this giant of a guy who was really a teddy bear and will give his shirt off his back to make you be successful! Whenever I would be engaged in a conversation with anyone about Larry, my first comment would be I love Larry Weigle! Thank you, Larry you will be missed!
