Lawton W. Greene

Lawton W. Greene, 89, of Naples FL, passed away Monday, October 27, 2025. He was a native of Valdosta, GA and a graduate of Valdosta High School. Lawton then joined the U.S. Army, which he served in for three years. Upon discharge, he graduated from Valdosta State University, where he received a B.S. Degree. Lawton then began a thirty-year distinguished career as a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation until retiring in 1992. Lawton was a sports enthusiast and a lifelong Atlanta Braves and University of Georgia fan. He was also an avid crossworder and completed them daily in the local paper. Lawton found comfort in a simple life.
He was the son of the late Edgar and Virginia Greene and husband of his late wife and greatest love of his life, Lillian Stratton Greene, who died August 9, 2016; a step-son Frederick "Mitchell" Shields; one sister, Sarah Deuley; and one brother, Edgar Greene. Lawton will be missed by his friend of 41 years, Tina, his parrot.
Surviving is one step-son, Danny Shields of Naples, FL; one daughter-in-law, Margaret Shields Carringer of Buford, GA; two brothers, Charles Greene and wife Linda, and Ray Greene both of GA; one sister-in-law, Cecelia Greene of FL; and five step-grandchildren; Chris Shields of GA, Kelly Shields of VA, Amanda Shields of GA, Daniel Shields of VA, and Virginia Gonatos-Waters, of North Carolina. He is also survived by many step- great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Graveside services were held at 1:00 pm Friday, November 7, 2025 at Valleytown Cemetery with the Reverend Steve West officiating. A flag folding presentation was provided by American Legion Post #96. Pallbearers were Chris Shields, Daniel Shields, Jonathan Shields, Gabriel Kim, Connor Kim, and Mason Shields.
