Lee Lipps, age 88, of Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Friday, February 17, 2023, at St. Claire HealthCare.
Born June 11, 1934, in Lexington, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Evert Conley Lipps and Frances Featherston Lipps. He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Elizabeth Lipps.
Lee is survived by his wife of 40 years, Carolyn Cox Lipps; a son, George (Wyann) Lipps of Sedalia, Missouri; a daughter, Amanda McClain of Sedalia, Missouri; a stepson, Christopher (Kathy) Peters of Charlotte, North Carolina; two stepdaughters, Tamara (Tom) Marshall of Griffin, Georgia, and Kimberly (Mark) Kelly of Ontario, Canada; and one sister, Betty Lipps Tapp of Morehead, Kentucky.
Others to cherish his memory include three grandchildren, Kassie, Matthew, and Michael; four step-grandchildren, Heather, Melissa, Nicholas, and Alexandra; four great grandchildren; and six step great grandchildren, as well as nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Lee enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps after completing the 11th Grade and served his country for 20 years, including tours in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal w/device (1960 -), Vietnam Service Medal w1*, and Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation w/Palm. In addition to serving in multiple countries, SSgt Lipps spent time in California as an assistant to the legal group SYNC PAC.
Following his service in the military, Lee continued his education earning a degree in environmental science from Eastern Kentucky University in 1975. Thereafter he enjoyed employment in a variety of professions. Lee wrote environmental impact statements for various construction projects for companies in Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana and served as city manager in Dayton, Kentucky, for five years. He moved from Northern Kentucky to Florida where he taught science at Lake Gibson High School for ten years. After he retired, Lee enjoyed doing "odds and ends" and building single engine, 30s models airplanes.
Lee and Carolyn moved to Morehead in 2006 to be near family. An aircraft builder, Lee was active at the Clyde A. Thomas Regional Airport and served as president of the E.A.A. (Experimental Aircraft Association) in Morehead for several years.
Lee will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, family member, and a faithful friend to many.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be held in the Spring, 2023.
