BLOUNTVILLE - Dr. Leighton "Doc" Wood, 72, of Blountville, went to be with the Lord on Friday, June 20, 2025.

Dr. Wood was an orthodontist who served the Tri Cities area for 28 years. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Middle Tennessee State University and his dental degree from the University of Tennessee. His orthodontic residency and Master of Science degree were completed at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He retired in the full rank of Colonel from the United States Air Force after 20 years of service as an orthodontist and an orthodontic instructor.

Though not affiliated with a specific church Dr. Wood was a devoted follower of Christ and a member of the Baptist Faith.

Dr. Wood was a lifelong passionate bodybuilder. He always inspired everyone around him. From the early days in the gym to the competitive stage. Leighton won Mr. Far East in Japan in 1986 and Greater Knox Classic Masters Champion in 2005.

Col Wood served 20 years as active duty in Dental for 2 years & 2 months and an Orthodontist for 17 years and 10 months earning the meritorious service medal with two oak leaf clusters and the Air Force commendation medal, with many more outstanding awards. Col Wood supported Operation DESERT SHIELD/STORM for 6 years in the area of responsibility. He completed Squadron Officer School in 1980 and Air War College in 1992.

Dr. Wood was preceded in death by his father, Leighton Kenneth Wood; mother, Billie Jean Wood.

He is survived by his wife, Penny Wood; brothers, Ronald K. Wood and wife, Barbara, Bobby D Wood and wife, Anita; children, Heather Black and husband, Chad, Hilaire Fisher and husband, Will, Tiffany Sin and husband, Jae, Joey Wood and wife, Cameron, Josh Wood and wife, Corinne, Teagan Wood, Cassidy Brown and husband, Joe, Luke Wood, Cameryn Wood Lane and husband, Gavin; step-daughter, Victoria Norton and husband, TJ; grandchildren, Bailey Black, Owen Black, Max Fisher, Grey Fisher, Mia Sin, Sophia Wood, Remington Wood, Olivia Wood, LT Wood, Savannah Wood, Lincoln Wood, Gideon Wood, Rowan Wood, Makenna Forster, MaClain Forster, Tatum Norton, T Norton; many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

The family will receive friends from 11 am to 1 pm on Friday June 27, 2025, at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport. A Celebration of life will follow at 1 pm in the funeral home Chapel with Rev. Jack Edwards officiating.

The family will always remember the kindness and support shown by Dr. Tongco, Leslie Frazier and the entire staff at Johnson City Urology also Dr. Blackwell and the staff at CVA Heart Team in Kingsport. They became a lifeline during a difficult time.

I had dr wood for my braces and he was always a sweet and chipper gentleman. I hate that I found out this late after he passed but he was Definitely good at what he did!
