Leon E. McCormack Jr.
April 8, 1935 – July 9, 2025
With profound love and deep respect, we announce the passing of Leon E. McCormack Jr., known to many simply as "Mr. Mac." Born on April 8, 1935, to Leon E. McCormack Sr. and Francis Brockman Masserant, Leon lived a life defined by duty, integrity, and steadfast devotion to those he loved.
A brilliant student and natural leader, Leon attended Missouri Military Academy from 1949 to 1953, graduating as valedictorian. Answering the call to serve his country, he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1954. His service took him from Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Illinois to Yeoman School in Bainbridge, Maryland, and then to Pearl Harbor, Oahu, with the 8th Naval District. He spent a year aboard the USS Pine Island in San Diego before concluding his distinguished service with two years in New Orleans in the 12th Naval District.
It was in New Orleans that Leon's life took a beautiful turn. A blind date introduced him to a spirited Wave named Lois Lingenfelter, who would soon become the love of his life. They were married on April 20, 1957, at the base in Algiers Parish, in a ceremony officiated by Captain Redmon. Together, they built a life grounded in laughter, deep companionship, and a love that spanned more than six decades.
Leon managed several gas stations over the years before becoming a bus driver for North East School District, where he became affectionately known as "Mr. Mac." He had a gift for connecting with people, and the children he drove to school remember his kindness and warm presence and on occasion, how strict he could be!
Leon and Lois shared many passions, including a love for birdwatching and collecting Civil War-era oil lamps, spending countless weekends exploring antique shops and flea markets together. Leon was also a devoted Harry Potter fan, enjoyed trivia, and created cherished memories with his grandchildren through his famous "quarter questions," which made each visit with him a moment of learning and laughter.
Leon was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lois, who passed away on July 5, 2018; his infant son, Mark Stephan McCormack; and his dear son, Leon E. "Duby" McCormack.
He is survived by his son, Michael McCormack; daughter, Jeri Phelps (Robert); daughter-in-law, Sherry McCormack; granddaughters, Trisha Thompson (Travis), Jessica Phelps-Walburn, Stacy Phelps (Seth Suchocki), and Sarah Mosley; grandson, Ben McCormack; and great-grandchildren, Elliot, Carter, James, Roman, Bailey, Khelan, and Emrey.
Though the world feels dimmer in his absence, Leon's warmth, wisdom, and gentle strength continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him. His legacy of service, scholarship, and love will forever remain a guiding light to his family and all who had the honor of knowing "Mr. Mac."
