Leona Dorothy Ness, age 100, passed away peacefully Wednesday, December 13, 2023 at her daughter Cathy's home with her daughter by her side. She was born August 29, 1923 in Green Bay to the late August and Irene (Capelle) Tuyls.
Leona graduated from Green Bay West High School in 1942, and worked for the Ben Franklin Store on Broadway after graduation. On February 12, 1949 she married her husband Gale Ness at Annunciation Church in Green Bay. Together they started and ran a gas station/repair shop for over 35 years. They celebrated 59 years together before Gale's passing on June 17, 2008.
In the early years, Lee was involved with Gale and The Ness Boys stock car racing, and she did some racing in the women's division. She enjoyed their yearly trips to Las Vegas, hunting trips out west, some road trips together with her sister and brother-in-law, Earl and Norma "Nubby" Ness, and the many years spent up at the lake in Townsend and the many friends they had made there.
Leona loved taking long walks up at the lake. She did jigsaw puzzles and was an avid reader, reading 2-3 books a week right up to the last couple months of her life. She really enjoyed going shopping with her sister Nubby and she had made the statement "the first thing I'm doing when I get to Heaven is picking up Nubby and we are going shopping!" She loved and adored her family so much and was an amazing mom, gramma, and great gramma.
Survivors include: one daughter, Cathy (Johann Zavada) Hansen of Abrams; two grandsons: Donne "DJ" Hansen and Dustin (Andrea) Hansen; one great grandson Taylor; two sisters-in-law: Donna "Boots" Hansen and Eileen "Tooter" (Roger) Adams; and special friends John and Betty Zimdars. Many nieces and nephews and other relatives survive.
Leona was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband Gale; two sisters: Lorraine Dart and Norma "Nubby" Ness; and her little dog Jasper who had been such great company for her.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, December 28, 2023 at 2:00pm at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church, 936 Ninth Street Green Bay with Father Tony De Los Santos officiating. Visitation will begin at 12:30pm up until the time of Mass at 2:00pm. Burial will take place on Friday, December 29, 2023 at 11:00 am at Fort Howard Memorial Park.
