Leonard Alan Stringer passed away on December 10, 2024, at home, surrounded by his family. Leonard was born in Indianapolis on January 17, 1949, to Roy and Joyce Stringer, the third of seven children.
In 1966, Leonard met Brenda Craney at the Westlake Dance Club. The two started dating and were married on November 9, 1968. Leonard and Brenda went on to have four daughters.
Following his graduation from Ben Davis High School in 1967, Leonard pursued a career in sheet metal work, starting as a journeyman before becoming a project manager. He retired in 2012 after 45 years in the field. He was a proud member of Sheet Metal Workers Local 20 for 57 years and received his 50-year pin in 2017. Leonard received his 50 Year Award of Gold in Freemasonry in July 2024.
In 2019, Leonard founded the White Lick Creek and Vandalia Trail Alliance, a nonprofit advocating for the creation of multi-use trails on the Far West Side of Indianapolis.
Leonard was a man of faith and a member of Mt. Olive United Methodist Church for 67 years, the same church where he and Brenda were married and all their children and grandchildren were baptized.
Leonard will be remembered as the best husband, father, grandfather, and friend a person could ask for. He loved to hear people’s stories and share his own. His great joys in life were spending time with his wife, kids, and grandkids; advocating for the Far West Side trails; Vettin’ around Indiana; and giving his time and energy to help those around him.
Leonard is survived by his wife Brenda (Craney); daughters Marie (Jason) Weber, Judy (William) Holman, Cindy (Robert) Miller, and Elizabeth Stringer (Mark Casey); grandchildren Marissa Weber, Madelyn and Maura Holman, and Lola, Sadie, and Robbie Miller; siblings David (Carlene) Stringer, Patricia (Gary) Hechinger, Wayne Stringer, Jeanne (Wayne) Rogers, Gay Stringer, and Charlene (Daniel) Czerwinski; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by both of his parents.
A celebration of life will be held at Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, 1449 S. High School Road, in Indianapolis on Sunday, December 15. Visitation with the family will take place between 1 and 3 p.m. with a service following. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the White Lick Creek and Vandalia Trail Alliance at wlcvta.org.
