LTC Lee London, Jr., U.S. Army (Ret.), 85, passed away peacefully on November 30, 2025, with his family at his side. He was born in a cotton mill village in Belmont, NC. It was here that he met the love of his life, Judy Smith London.
Lee joined the Army in 1963. He served with distinction for 22 years. His first overseas deployment was to Christmas Island in the Pacific where he witnessed 26 Cold War-era nuclear test explosions and was later assigned to clean up a nuclear test gone awry on Johnston Island. He attended Infantry School and the Command and General Staff College in Leavenworth, KS. He completed his undergraduate degree at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, and his master's degree at George Washington University. He served in Naples, Italy, at the NATO Command Headquarters. He served in the Vietnam War, in Korea, and at various posts throughout the United States.
He moved 17 times during his military career, with Judy by his side. When LTC London landed at Fort McClellan in Anniston, he fell in love with the community and decided to retire from military service. He then launched a successful private sector career as a financial advisor with The Equitable and AXA Advisors.
Lee was a faithful servant to his Lord and Savior. At Anniston and Jacksonville First United Methodist Churches, he served in lay leadership roles including staff-parish relations and on the board at Camp Lee. A gifted leader, he taught Sunday School classes for countless people of all ages for decades and led a men's Bible study with long-time church friends at his home each week.
He loved visiting the beach with his family, traveling across our nation, cheering for the Atlanta Braves, and tending his garden.
Lee was preceded in death by his parents, Arlene and Leroy London, Sr., and his brother, Floyd London (Carolyn). He is survived by his dear wife of 61 years, Judy Smith London; beloved daughters, Kelly London Huie (Doug) of Anniston, and Leah London Williams (Brooke) of St. Louis, MO; five delightful and talented grandchildren: Gracie Huie, "Good Buddy" London Huie (Sarah), Sadie Huie, Anna Mae Williams, and Ivy Williams; a sister-in-law, Carolyn London; and his dear friend, "Big Sister," Lila Hamilton.
A memorial service will be held at K.L. Brown Memory Chapel in Golden Springs on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:45 a.m.
An interment with full military honors will be held at Alabama National Cemetery located in Montevallo, at a later date.
