Leslie Harry James-lovingly known as Les, Harry, Papa, and Father-passed away on June 29, 2025, in Billings, Montana, surrounded by the deep love of his family. Born in Lewistown on May 18, 1950, Les was a proud veteran, a dedicated public servant, and a man whose strength, humor, and heart left an indelible mark on everyone he met.
Les served his country with honor and carried the title of disabled veteran with pride. In retirement, he remained full of life-plowing snow, mowing lawns, traveling, and sharing stories that could light up a room. His gift for storytelling and his unforgettable presence made him a cherished companion and friend.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Penny James, whose love and patience were the steady foundation of their life together. Les and Penny were married on September 4th, 1976, in Billings at the Congregational Church. It was a small wedding on a nice fall day.
He is also survived by his four daughters, Joye Woodson, Johna (Brian) Elliott, Juliana (Ron) Edwards, and Jennifer (Matt) Kellogg; four grandchildren, Landon, Jaxson, Livia, and Raeya, who will carry forward his legacy of laughter, strength, and bold spirit; sisters, Margaret James and Linda Tipps.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Judith James; his siblings, Edward James, Jimmy James, Diana Twet and Wayne James.
Les had a heart full of passions. He loved Westerns, John Deere tractors, drive-in movies, and most of all, time spent with family. He was generous in the most genuine ways, often offering sandwiches, donuts, or flowers, and expressing love in ways that were uniquely his-sometimes loud, sometimes unexpected, but always sincere.
Though he didn't always follow tradition, Les was deeply loved and will be remembered for his authenticity, his humor, and his fierce loyalty to those he held dear.
A celebration of life with military honors will be held at a later date. In true Les fashion, it will be a little chaotic, a bit unconventional, and filled with love.
May he rest peacefully, surrounded by the memories and the people he loved most.
