Bobby "Lew" Thompson, a devoted husband, proud dad and papa, respected businessman, and cherished friend to many; passed away on August 26, 2025, at the age of 66. Lew's life was marked by hard work, a generous spirit, and an unwavering love for his family. He grew up with drive and determination, always ready to take on new challenges. In his younger years, sports were his passion. A graduate of Huntsville High School, he was a proud member of both the Huntsville Eagle basketball and football teams and was honored for his achievements with induction into the Madison County Athletic Hall of Fame. Lew carried that same determination into his career, where he built a reputation as a problem solver and a man people could count on. His professional journey began with the same grit and determination that defined his life. In 1983, he bought his very first truck and began hauling turkeys for Butterball. Lew ran his business out of a small office in downtown Huntsville, filled with big dreams. Over the years, those dreams grew right alongside his fleet. His company quickly earned a reputation for dependability, excellent service, and an unwavering commitment to getting the job done. What began as a one-truck operation became Lew Thompson & Son Trucking, Inc., operating more than 230 trucks and 400 trailers, carrying forward the values Lew instilled from the very beginning: hard work, honesty, and treating people right. His colleagues admired his vision and trusted his leadership, which fostered growth and opportunity in every venture he undertook. Lew's story is not just the story of a business, it's the story of a man whose vision, perseverance, and love for his family created a legacy that will endure for generations. While trucking was the foundation of his career, Lew also discovered a deep love for the game of golf and eventually owned two golf resorts. Golf gave him balance, joy, and friendships that extended well beyond business. Of all his accomplishments, Lew's greatest joy came from his family. He loved being a dad, and becoming "Papa" brought him even greater happiness. He treasured time at the beach, deep-sea fishing trips, and rounds of golf, simple moments that meant the most when shared with those he loved. His faith also meant a great deal to him, Lew gave his life to Christ on Easter Sunday of 2024 and was a member of Huntsville First Assembly of God. Lew was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Glenda (Faulkner) Thompson. He is survived by his loving wife, Carla; his children, Josh (Kendra) Thompson and Tiffany (Ryan) Haught; and his three grandchildren, Jace and Jagger Thompson, and Tristen Haught, all of Huntsville. He is also survived by his siblings, Brenda (Mike) Puryear of Hindsville, Ronnie (Patty) Thompson of Huntsville, and Gail (Terry) Thomas of Huntsville, along with many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly. Visitation will be from 5:00–7:00 PM on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at Brashears Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, on the lawn of Lew Thompson & Son Trucking, with Pastor Alex Foster officiating. Private burial will follow at Thompson Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Billy Cartright, Mike Jones, Jeff Smith, Val Breitag, Samuel Satterfield, and Rocky Burnett. Honorary pallbearers include Charles Berry, Tom Tice, Joe Shrum, Jeff Davis, Phil Thompson, Garry Thompson, Sam Mathias, and Jerry Hargis. Services are entrusted to Brashears Funeral Home and Crematory of Huntsville.
