Lewis Cleveland Smith, Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend, bid farewell to this world on July 17, 2024. He was surrounded by his loving family at Richmond County Hospice Haven in Rockingham, North Carolina.

Born on September 9, 1946, Lewis led a life full of diverse experiences and meaningful contributions. He dedicated himself to various professions throughout his lifetime. Lewis was the proud owner and operator of Rockingham Barber Shop from 1967 to 1973, where he touched the lives of many with his skilled hands and warm personality. He then transitioned a role as the yard supervisor for 20 years at Stone Container Company before serving 17 years as a Jail Supervisor for the Richmond County Sheriff Department. His work ethic and commitment were exemplary in every role he undertook. 

Along with his profound work history, Lewis was a Past Master of the Masonic Lodge #495 in Rockingham, was truly a Christian man , was a member of Cobb Memorial Baptist Church and was an avid collector.

Lewis also honored his country by serving in the National Guard, showcasing his dedication to both his community and nation. His educational journey saw him graduate from high school and later become a graduate of the Durham Institution of Barbers.

Those who knew Lewis well will remember him for his kind heart and love for his family – traits that defined him throughout his life. His truthful nature and unwavering support endeared him to all who had the privilege of crossing paths with him.

Lewis leaves behind a legacy that will be cherished by his surviving family members: his devoted wife of 57 years, Sandra Clark Smith; his children Lewis Cleveland Smith III (Caryla), Christopher Heath Smith, Eric Kyle Smith (Jessica); grandchildren Brandon Smith (Shannon), Jeremy Smith (Jasmine), Lilly Smith, Victoria Smith; great-grandchildren Jettson Smith, Bristol Smith, Charlotte Smith, Tripp Smith; along with his brother Robert Larry Smith (Tami), nephews Brian Smith (Katie), Robert Smith (Renea), and numerous other relatives.

In this time of profound loss, Lewis is reunited in eternity with his father Lewis Cleveland Smith Sr., mother Aliece Leviner Smith, and all those who have gone before him.

A visitation will be held at Cobb Memorial Baptist Church in Rockingham on July 20th from 11:00 AM to 12:45 PM followed by a Funeral Service at 1:00 PM with Rev. Dr. Wayne Greene and Danny Bowers officiating. These services will provide an opportunity for loved ones to come together to celebrate the life of a remarkable individual who touched so many hearts during his time on earth.

Interment will follow at Richmond County Memorial Park with Masonic Rites.

Lewis Cleveland Smith Jr.'s presence will be deeply missed but never forgotten. May he rest in peace knowing he was truly loved and admired by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that Memorials be made on Lewis' behalf to Richmond County Hospice, 1119 N US Hwy 1, Rockingham, NC 28379.
