Father Liam Collins

Father Liam Collins died peacefully on Monday, January 19, 2026 at home surrounded by family and enveloped in love and prayers. He was a loving and devoted husband and priest. Liam was born on October 29,1945 in Nenagh, County Tipperary, Ireland. He was the fourth of seven children of the late Sally Grace and Michael Collins. Liam grew up in the rural countryside and was profoundly shaped by his parents' deep faith, their love of nature and sense of justice. Music and poetry were integral parts of his childhood and continued to nourish his soul throughout his life. As a teenager, Liam worked as a bartender at the American Embassy in Dublin. He developed a close relationship with US Ambassador Matthew McCloskey. This friendship changed Liam's life as it was McCloskey who sponsored him in the seminary and introduced him to the missionary diocese of far o Savannah, Georgia. One of the highlights of Liam's time at the Embassy was meeting President John F. Kennedy in June of 1963. Kennedy's parting words were "Liam, pray for the president." Liam was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest on June 12,1971. He served in the diocese of Savannah for 24 years, finding joy and meaning in each parish that he served. Liam's most formative assignment, however, was Pastor of St. Mary's in Savannah. He was a ectionately known as The Priest of 36th Street. It only seems fitting that he would die on Martin Luther King Day. After much discernment, Liam left the active ministry in 1994 and married his best friend and the love of his life, Mary Brennan.

In 1996 he was received into the Episcopal Church and began his ministry at St. Mark's in Brunswick, GA. In 2008, Liam and Mary returned to Savannah where Liam served in many parishes until his retirement. Liam cherished his ministry in both the Roman Catholic and Episcopal Churches. In Liam's own words: "The primary focus of my ministry has always been seeking to awaken all to the bonds of love and respect that unite us as God's people. We are God's very heart, hands and feet in this wounded, broken world." In addition to his parents, Liam was predeceased by his sister Mary and her husband, Sean Bonfield, his sister Margaret and her husband, Ken Johnston, his brother Michael Collins, his brother Eddie Collins, and Mary's parents, Tom and Agnes Brennan.

Liam is survived by his loving wife Mary, his sister Colette and her husband Liam Irvine, his sister Anne Collins Healy, his sister-in-law Bunty Collins and Mary's seven siblings and their spouses: Julie and Andrew Purkey, Tom and Jane Brennan, Sally and Brian Kennedy, Philip Brennan, Joe and Michelle Brennan, Peter and Anna Brennan, Agnes and Pete Law. Liam is also survived by his many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews from both sides of the pond. This large and loving family brought Liam great joy throughout his life. The Collins and Brennan families would like to thank all those who cared for Liam this past year especially his devoted, loving caregiver Jackie Heraldez as well as Tricia Coaxum and Shannon Oliver, and his Hospice nurse Jenni Knittig. Also, we are so grateful for our family and friends who were so loving and devoted to Liam throughout his illness.

A memorial mass will be held at St. Paul the Apostle Episcopal Church in Savannah on Saturday, January 31st at 11:00 am. A reception will follow in the parish hall immediately after the service. A private family burial will take place later that afternoon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mary's Community Center, 812 W 36th St., Savannah, Ga.31415.

Mary and Liam Collins. My Anam Cara. Although your soul has left your earthly body, Liam, I still feel that you will be my, and Larry's soul friend forever. No doubt you two have encountered each other again, and are now rejoicing in Anam Cara. We will miss you here in our earth-bound lives, but know that your arms still surround us, holding onto us in the dark days and rejoicing in the days when we will again find happiness.
Mary, the pain you feel now never goes away; it just becomes different as you live through it every day. It eventually will be like a weathered old friend because you will laugh and grieve and cry together forever. My hope is that you feel those loving arms around you very soon, because they are there. You just can't see them through your loss and your pain. But they most surely are there, because Liam lives in your heart.
I send you all my love, dear Mary.

I am sorry to hear about the loss of Father Collins and my heart goes out to his family. He was a good man who baptized me and did my first reconcilation when he was still in Macon at St. Peter Claver. I am happy to hear he was loved and found a wonderful commuity in coastal Georgia.

Mary, I was so sad to see that Liam had died. He was so kind to "marry" Sarah and Zach!
We lost Bill almost 13 years ago. The sadness remains but also the wonderful memories. My heart is with you in this new phase of your life.

Mary,
Zach and I send our deepest sympathies. Liam married us in 2004 (keeping our secret that we were actually already married for visas to live in London!); it was wonderful to have you both at the wedding. He was such a gentle soul, with a kind and loving heart. And absolutely firm that we had to tell our parents about the elopement when we had kids!
I hope that the good memories stay and your grief fades.

I was a young teenager when Fr Collins arrived at St James. He was loved by all. I will always remember how wonderful he was in confession, ensuring that God will never stop loving us regardless of our faults. Fr Liam helped my Mom when she was going through a very difficult time after my father left her. Fr Collins married my husband and I in my Mother´s church at the time, Blessed Sacrament. To the Collins and the Brennan family my thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Father Liam was my friend, spiritual director and just the most loving and caring man of God! His gentle spirit, love of God and Contemplative spirit nourished and nurtured so many of us at our retreats at Honey Creek. Father Liam helped me through my divorce and years later married me and my second husband in a private ceremony. It was such a gift!!

I am blessed to have known and loved him and he will always be in my heart and memory.

Thank you Liam for the love you brought to every place you went and ministered. You truly were a servant of God and I know you will now be spreading love and joy in heaven. I will forever love and miss you

Father Collins brought love & truth to the children of our neighborhood. These were young people who had success in their life because of their relationship with Fr. Collins. The trips to Tybee Beach. His car full of 8 to 10 boys. Fed with home made sandwiches & cookies. Teaching soccer in a basketball neighborhood. Attending funerals. He would chase the bad guys off the playground. Many of those youth graduated, joined the military, worked skilled jobs and even attended top universities. Catholic, or non Catholic, they were given the same lesson and support, to be leaders not followers. To stand and not bend to the lure of quick money. You will be missed, Fr. Collins, but always in our hearts.

I and my family have so much love and respect for Father Collins. He was a loving, kind and deeply beautiful human being. He walked the talk. Lived a liberation theology in every sense of the word and preached the worthiness of every human being. What a blessing he was to St. Peter Claver Catholic Church and to this community. Rest in peace God´s faithful servant. Rosalind McMillan
