Liam Honan, 92, passed away on Wednesday, April 3rd, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born January 15th, 1932 to Bridget and Michael Honan in Kilrush, County Clare, Ireland.
Liam is survived by his loving wife of 62 years Teresa "Tess" Honan; brother Mick Honan; five children Maura McGuinness (spouse Seamus McGuinness), Geri Robinson (spouse Frank Robinson), John Honan (spouse Diane Honan), Tara McCormack (spouse Tom McCormack), and William Honan (spouse Karen Honan); eleven grandchildren Ashling, Bevin, Meghan, Ben, Erin, Kerry, Liam, Morgan, Brenna, Charlie, and Kaleigh; and countless nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
He is predeceased by his brothers, P.J. Honan, Flan Honan, John Honan, and sister Maureen Coghlan.
The phrase "To know him is to love him" often feels overused, but there are no truer words to describe Liam Honan. Liam was a radiant presence, the funniest man in the room, and a born host known for the way he refused to sit down until everyone had a seat at the table.
At 18, Liam immigrated to America, where he served in the United States Army before making his home in New York City. On a trip home to Ireland, he crossed paths with Tess Morrissey. They eventually fell in love, got married, and raised their five children in Clifton, New Jersey. Years later, they purchased a family home in Red Bank, New Jersey, where Liam frequently hosted his family and friends. He was a skilled carpenter and worked in the New York City Carpenters Union for many years.
As the cherished patriarch of his family, affectionately called "Papa," Liam's dedication to his family was boundless and his greatest joy was his grandchildren.
In 1999, Liam and Tess retired to Surfside Beach, South Carolina, where they made wonderful memories with their loved ones. In retirement, Liam became an avid golfer and purchased a fishing boat. He deepened his love for cooking through the "Papa Breakfasts" that he crafted for his grandchildren on the weekends. His neighbors were always welcome for a beer in the garage, where he loved to sit with his family and watch the sunset.
His generosity and desire to serve his loved ones extended without bounds. He embodied selflessness by consistently going the extra mile without expecting anything in return, and acting before being asked. A rare man, his legacy is carried on through the lives he touched, inspiring us all to show love unconditionally and act with kindness unprompted.
A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 10th at St. Michaels Church in Murrels Inlet, South Carolina.
