Libby Behar Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hankins & Whittington Funeral Home on Oct. 22, 2024.
Libby Fischer Behar, 88, of Charlotte, NC passed away peacefully on October 18, 2024. Born on December 31, 1935 in Brooklyn, NY, she was the daughter of the late Irving and Julia Fischer. Libby had a twin sister named Charlene, who passed away at age 79. She is survived by her loving husband, Albert Behar, along with her daughter Laurie Halt, her grandson Christian Halt, and her sons Eric Behar of Charlotte, NC and Michael Behar and his wife Ann of Little Washington, NC.
Libby and her sister Charlene were born prematurely, and both spent time in an incubator. This resulted in a condition known as "ROP", retinopathy of prematurity, for Libby. This was caused by being exposed to too much oxygen in the incubator damaging the developing blood vessels in the retina of the eye. Libby struggled with eye problems her entire life which progressed to blindness in later years.
Growing up in New York, Libby and her beloved sister Charlene loved to attend Broadway shows and experience all of the sights and sounds that New York City had to offer! Libby met the love of her life, Al, in 1959 and they were married a year later. They eventually left New York City and moved to Charlotte in the 1970's with their three children. Libby was a stay at home mother who focused on raising her children. In her later years, she worked in the real estate industry for Ruth Roberts Realty in Charlotte.
Libby was very social, and she and Al loved to entertain at their home. Being a twin born on New Year's Eve, their home was always filled with family, friends, and laughter! She loved to travel, and it was her wish to see the world with her husband and friends before she lost her vision. She and Al traveled to many places including England, Scotland, Wales, Canada, Alaska, Hawaii and all over the U.S.
Libby and Al also enjoyed spending time at their condo in North Myrtle Beach, SC.
Later in life, Libby and Al volunteered for over ten years at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte. She also continued her passion for theater by volunteering with Al at the Belk Theater and the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center for over twenty years. In addition, Libby loved to exercise, even with her limited vision. Her instructors always saved her a spot at the front of the class, so she could more easily follow and feel fully included in the workout.
The last decade of Libby's life was very challenging with the deterioration of her eyesight and eventually complete blindness. Fortunately, she was able to learn coping mechanisms with the help of the Metrolina Association for the Blind, where she learned braille, how to use a cane and many other helpful tools. Being an avid reader her whole life, Libby spent most of her time listening to her favorite books in audio version. Her husband Al remained completely devoted to Libby and was her caregiver and loving partner until the very end.
A viewing ceremony will be held at Hankins and Whittington, 1111 East Blvd, Charlotte on Thursday October 24th at 4pm. Service will follow at 5pm. There will be a reception following the service at the home of Laurie Halt at 4017 Cambridge Hill Lane, Charlotte, NC. Flowers may also be sent to Hankins and Whittington, or donations may be made in Libby's honor to the Metrolina Association for the Blind.

Condolences to the Behar family. I only knew Libby & Al for a short time via my being a volunteer with Hospice/Via. They are a delightful couple who clearly had so much love for each other. I hope your memories will sustain you at this time.
