Lila Belle Carrara, 92, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2025, in hospice care at Rutland Regional Medical Center in Rutland, Vermont, with family by her side.
Born on December 22, 1932, in Bellows Falls, Vermont, Lila was the beloved daughter of Carl and Nettie (Johnson) Woodard. She shared an extraordinary bond with her identical twin sister, Laura -- a connection that created a lifetime of loving memories.
She worked for many years at Rutland House Ltd., a furniture store owned by Jerry and Nonnie Tarr. Her professional relationship with Nonnie blossomed into a sister-like friendship that Lila treasured for all time. After the closing of their store, the Tarrs continued to employ her at their residence. Lila retired after nearly 40 years of dedicated service.
Lila resided in Shrewsbury and Rutland, Vermont for most of her life. She filled each home with love and warmth. Known for her radiant smile and delectable desserts, she welcomed all who crossed her threshold with open arms. Trips to Lake Bomoseen for a picnic lunch and evening drives to spot wildlife with her husband Larry became a treasured tradition -- a simple yet blessed time she enjoyed until his passing two years ago.
A unique chapter in her life included a lovesick moose named Josh who visited the Carrara family farm in October 1987. Enamored with their cow named Jessica, he remained for 76 days. This unusual romance captured worldwide attention and brought thousands of visitors to view the phenomenal event. Lila took pride in assisting in managing their country store for many years afterwards. Popular items sold included memorabilia relating to this remarkable affair.
During Lila's final days, she was attentively cared for by Lisa Coburn, LNA, at The Pines. Also, her niece Jeanie Butler along with Dianne loyally stayed vigilant during her brief stay in hospice care.
Family was the cornerstone of Lila's life. She is survived by her children: Lila Boucher (Peter) of Maine; Thomas Carrara (Kathleen) of Shrewsbury; Richard Carrara (Debbie) of Rutland; Bennie Carrara (Laurie) of Shrewsbury; and her daughter-in-law and truly devoted caretaker, Dianne Carrara; her twin sister, Laura Colomb of Rhode Island; nine grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Larry Carrara; her son Peter Jack Carrara; five brothers: Delmer, Herman, Herbert, Carl, and Wallace Woodard; one sister, Edith Butler; and one great grandchild, Leah Boucher.
A graveside service and celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Lila's memory will remain a source of comfort and inspiration to all who knew her. May her legacy of love and kindness continue to shine brightly in the hearts she touched.
