Lindy Mack Cannon, age 88, of Montreat, NC, passed away January 10, 2025, at Mission Hospital, Asheville, NC.
Mr. Lindy Cannon was born on March 1, 1936, in Pitt County, North Carolina. He resided with his grandfather for much of his young life and landed in San Antonio after moving around for a few years with his mother. He was heavily involved with The Boy Scouts and was an Eagle Scout himself who worked for several summers at Philmont Boy Scout Ranch in New Mexico. Lindy attended Austin College in Sherman, TX and Austin Seminary, in Austin, TX, graduating in 1958 & 1961, respectively. He furthered his education at the Presbyterian School of Christian Education, in VA, graduating in 1964.
Lindy met Anna, his wife of 62 years, during his years at Austin College, and they were married on November 23, 1962, in Cuero, TX. They have 4 children, 11 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. In 1965, Lindy was ordained by the Presbyterian Church USA and became pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Mexico, MO. His pastoral career led him to Hunter Memorial First Presbyterian in Sikeston, MO, South Webster Presbyterian Church in Webster Groves, MO, New Covenant Fellowship in St. Louis, MO, and Northfield Presbyterian Church in Northfield, OH. From 1982 -1988 he was employed by Memorial Mission Hospital where he began the Chaplaincy program, which still exists today. In 2005, he retired from Buncombe County as an Adult Protective Services Social Worker. Chair Caning then became his third career. This hobby began in 1979, and in 1982, he became a Master Caner and member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild. Above all else, Lindy loved being a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. In retirement, he enjoyed watching St. Louis Cardinals baseball and Tarheel basketball, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with Anna attending auctions, craft fairs and rocking on his front porch in Montreat. His family considers his best asset to have been his love for people.
Lindy is preceded in death by parents, James A. Tripp and Letha McGowan Perciful; and brother, Charles A. Tripp.
Left to cherish his memories is his wife of 62 years, Anna Doggett Cannon; daughters, Rachel C. Groves (Todd) of Cumming, GA and Elizabeth C. Morgan (Jamie) of White Salmon, WA; sons, James W. Cannon (Deborah) of Jacksonville, FL, and David M. Cannon (Grisselle) of Montreat, NC; grandchildren, James W. Cannon II (Candice), Jessica Cannon (Matt Hill), Alexandria Cannon (Wesley Fehl), Hannah Groves, Carter Groves, Sarah Groves, Eleanor Groves, McGowan Groves, Kayleigh Bourlet (Chris), Olivia Bostrom (Owen), and Brooke Morgan; and great grandchildren, Aiden Bourlet, Brooks Bourlet, Ladd Bourlet, Jude Bourlet, Ryker Fehl, Raya Fehl, and Mariah West.
The family will receive friends on Friday, January 17, 2025, from 12:00 to 1:00pm at Harwood Home for Funerals, Black Mountain, NC. A celebration of life service will immediately follow at 1:00pm at the funeral home with Carter Groves and Mitch Collier officiating.
