It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Lisa Karen Skaggs, of
Houston, Texas, a beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, godmother, granddaughter, daughter-in-law, cousin, and dear friend. Lisa departed this world peacefully in the early morning of January 15, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering strength.
Lisa was born on May 26, 1968, in San Juan, Trinidad & Tobago, to Harold Lewis and Glenda Haywood. She grew up in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, where she was raised by Glenda and Francis Foster (Lisa's stepfather). She was part of a family-oriented community and formed lifelong bonds with her childhood friends. From an early age, Lisa exhibited a fascination with life and a curiosity that drove her to accomplish remarkable feats. At age 13, she migrated to New York, where she graduated from Pine Bush High School. She earned her Bachelor of Business Administration from Baruch College, CUNY, and her Master of Business Administration in Human Resources from the University of Illinois where she met her future husband, David Skaggs, and continued to make lifelong friends who valued her vibrant spirit.
Lisa's professional journey was as inspiring as it was diverse. As a young adult living in NYC, she pursued a career in the corporate world. Her motivation and drive for success led her to be successful at TIAA-CREF and Dow Chemical. After graduating from the University of Illinois, she began her career at Dow Chemical where her dedication and talent quickly became apparent. Over the years, Lisa and David developed a passion for real estate, leading Lisa to retire after nearly 20 years from her corporate career and begin a career as a real estate agent, later leading to her obtaining her broker's license. She was known for her exceptional work ethic, innovative thinking, and the warmth she brought to others.
Lisa was a devoted and loving mother to DJ and Alyssa Skaggs. Her children were the light of her life, and she took immense pride in their achievements. As a mother, she was nurturing, patient, and endlessly supportive, always encouraging her children to follow their dreams and believe in themselves. Her love for her children was boundless and evident in every aspect of her life.
Lisa embraced life with enthusiasm and grace, especially developing reasons for a celebration trip including her birthday month of May celebration, which she disguised as the "end of school year celebration". Her friends and family will always remember her infectious laughter, her ability to find her way into "restricted areas" at her children's sporting events, her joy in the simplest of things, and her unyielding positivity.
In her community, Lisa dedicated countless hours to supporting her children's school activities, sporting activities, participating on the St. Mark's School Board, and Linkwood Civic Club Board, Troop 54 and 55 Scouting activities, her engagement in the Mom's in Prayer at Episcopal High School, and, of course, her joining the Cookie Moms, first as an alternate and then moving up the ranks to becoming Co-Chair.
Lisa is survived by her husband of 18 years, David, Son, David Jr. (DJ), Daughter, Alyssa, Mother, Glenda Lewis, Siblings, Kersha Fortune, Stacey-Ann Foster, Sandra Lewis, Kenrick Lewis, Tony Lewis, Lyndell Lewis, June Lewis, Michael Lewis, Beverly Lewis, Penny Lewis, Byron Lewis, and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws, and countless friends who will forever hold her memory dear. She was preceded in death by her Elders - Ivy Haywood, Selwyn Haywood, Elroy Haywood, Harold Lewis, Garvin Lewis, Phyllis Lewis-King who she now joins in eternal peace with our Heavenly Father and Son Jesus Christ.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at 2pm at Episcopal High School Chapel followed by a reception at St. Mark's Episcopal School, where friends and family will gather to honor her memory and the incredible legacy she leaves behind. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to
MD Anderson Cancer Center https://gifts.mdanderson.org/Default.aspx in Lisa's honor or to the Ivy Haywood Education initiative (IHEI-Uganda) https://www.iheiuganda.org/about – a program started in honor of Lisa's grandmother to sponsor children's education in Uganda.
Lisa Karen Skaggs will be remembered for her unwavering strength, her boundless love, and the joy she brought into the lives of so many. Her memory will live on in the hearts of her loved ones, and her legacy of kindness and compassion will continue to inspire us all.
Rest in peace, out dearest Lisa. While you will be deeply missed, your joy and spirit will forever remain with us.
