Lois Marie (Deckard) Engelking, 83, passed away after a brief illness at IU Methodist Hospital on March 3, 2025. She was born July 3, 1941 in Clear Spring, Indiana to the late James T. and Helen A. (Elkins) Deckard.
Lois lived all of her life in Jackson County. She married John Andrew Engelking on November 5, 1958, and they were married almost 40 years until his passing. Working for the John C. Groub Company, she made her way through the ranks, opening many stores in Southern Indiana and knowing every aspect of each department. Before retiring after over 40 years, she worked in the produce department and became famous for her chicken Caesar salads. Lois was a people person, and she loved going out dancing as much as being in her garden. She was a great cook and baker, and was well-known for her pineapple upside down cake. She was also a country music lover and especially liked to see local bands perform live, her favorite being Six Ways to Sunday. When not at a show or out on the town, she could be found at one of her favorite restaurants: Larrison's or Betty's Townhouse Cafe. Lois was a member of the Order of the Eastern Stars, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and the Moose Lodge. She was well loved and will be greatly missed by all those who knew her.
Left behind to cherish Lois' memory are her daughter, Janis Marie (Patrick) Ryan; sons, John Duane (Ida) Engelking and Jeffery (Linda) Engelking; and grandchildren, Christopher Ryan, Justin Engelking, Joshua Engelking, Emily Engelking, Jared Engelking, Alaina Engelking, Travis Engelking, Mandi Richart, Erica (Kyle) Sommers, Ashley (Mike) York, Jamie (Aaron) Rose, and Michelle Hickman; and 15 great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Engelking; her parents, listed above; and a son, Steven Ray Engelking.
Funeral services for Lois will be held Saturday, March 8, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Voss and Sons Funeral and Cremation Services, 316 North Chestnut Street, Seymour. Her granddaughter, Emily Engelking, will officiate. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Lois will be laid to rest immediately following at Riverview Cemetery.
