Lola Bigham, born on November 14, 1925, in Montague County, Texas, was a woman whose life was a testament to love, faith, and dedication. She was the cherished daughter of the late H.P. and Frances Howard and sister to Diamond, with whom she shared a close bond throughout her life.
At the tender age of five, Lola and her family moved to Silverton, Texas, where she grew up and graduated from Silverton High School at the remarkable age of 16. With a passion for education, she attended Texas Technological College, later known as Texas Tech University, earning a bachelor's degree in education. Lola dedicated 25 years to shaping young minds within the Lubbock Independent School District, including ten deeply rewarding years as an elementary homebound teacher.
Lola's heart was captured by a dashing young Army Air Corps Master Sergeant, R.L. Bigham, whom she met while he was stationed at Lubbock Army Airfield, now Reese Air Force Base. Their love story led to marriage a year later, and they were blessed with a son, Rick, who became the center of their world.
Lola was blessed with two grandchildren, Staci and Rick Jr., whom she loved dearly. Staci, who preceded her in death in 2020, held a special place in her heart. Rick Jr., her only surviving grandchild, shared a close bond with Lola, filled with cherished moments of laughter and lighthearted banter.
After retiring from teaching, Lola found new success in the real estate world, thriving as both a realtor and builder. She and R.L. shared a passion for travel, exploring the wonders of the world together—from the Orient and Europe to South America and Russia, and countless places within the United States.
Lola's dedication to her community was unparalleled. She generously volunteered her time with numerous organizations, including Meals on Wheels, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program at Texas Tech, Literacy Lubbock, and the National Ranching Heritage Center. Her unwavering faith was evident in her 70 years of devoted service at Southcrest Baptist Church.
After the loss of her beloved husband, R.L., in 1992, to whom she was married for over 48 years, Lola met Darwin Bigness, and they were married in 1996.
Lola is survived by her son, Rick Bigham, and his wife Joanne of Lubbock; her grandson, Rick Bigham Jr., his wife Christy, and their children Madison and Grady, who lovingly called her "Memaw" and her stepdaughter, Deborah Bigness of Lubbock. She also leaves behind her two nieces, Tena McArthur of Sweetwater, Texas, and Annette Haney of Plainview, Texas, along with several other nieces, nephews, and countless friends who will miss her dearly.
In addition to her parents and two husbands, Lola was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Staci Levenson, and her two sisters, Opal Howard and Diamond Williams.
Lola's life was a testament to the power of love, the importance of service, and the enduring strength of faith in her Savior Jesus Christ. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her. Lola, you will be forever missed and cherished.
