Lore Ferro Obituary

Lore Ferro, née Gausmann, died peacefully at age 94 of natural causes at Kaplan Hospice Residence in Newburgh, NY. Hers was a life well lived. At an early age, Lore experienced the worst of war - having to flee her family home in Dessau Germany in 1945 as a teenager. She made her way to fashion school in Paris, and emigrated to NYC to find work in the fashion industry. Just a young woman starting out, she left her family and all that was familiar (again) to pursue her dreams in America. Her determination paid off in the form of career successes as design director for the major pattern makers of the day.. Simplicity, Butterick, Vogue, McCalls. Her iconic designs reflected the culture and sensibilities of the 60's and 70's as sewing captured the imagination of that generation.
Along with her husband, woodcut artist Walter Ferro, Lore made her home in Pound Ridge NY. Together, they traveled the world in both professional and personal capacities. She, on buying trips to find the latest fashion trends, and he, for inspiration for his work. These jaunts included many Caribbean and Great Lakes boating adventures with friends, a year-long sabbatical in Europe and visits to Egypt with Walter in his role as Art Director for Mobil Oil. This worldliness was reflected in Lore's exquisite taste in fashion, and her appreciation for many diverse cultures. Lore's grit, determination, adventurous spirit, her kind and demure demeanor and worldly experiences are uniquely inspiring to all who knew her. Truly, a life well lived.
Lore is survived by stepdaughters Paula Ferro Osenni of Middletown, NY, Elizabeth Devine of West Hartford, CT and nephew Marc Gausmann of Germany.
A private service will be arranged with the family.
