Lorene Ann "Lorry" Shackelford Obituary

Lorene Ann “Lorry” Hughes Shackelford, affectionately known as “Mega,” passed away peacefully on December 17, 2025, in Covington, Georgia, at the age of 96. Born on September 5, 1929, in Syracuse, New York, she was the daughter of Charles and Rosaana Gaudet Hughes and the wife of the late Huey “Shack” Shackelford.

Lorry’s life was grounded in faith, family, and service. A long-time and faithful member of Gaither’s Church in Covington, she served joyfully in numerous ministries. Whether teaching children’s Sunday School classes, working during Vacation Bible School, cooking in the church kitchen, Lorry offered her time and talents with a generous spirit. Her skilled hands crafted countless baby sweaters, blankets, and afghans that warmed both bodies and hearts. Beyond the church, she gave back to her community through her work with the Covington Clothes Closet alongside her dear friend Linda Bridges and later at Robertson’s Lawn Mower Shop in Mansfield with her close friend Helen Robertson.

Her greatest joy, however, was her family. As a mother to Sandra Ralston (Kent), Stacy Arick (Michael), and Lisa Herring (Greg), Lorry was devoted, creative, and ever-resourceful. When she became “Mega,” to her grandchildren, Brett, Cindy, Brittney, Devin, and Matthew, and great-grandchildren, Evie, Jed, and Henry, her heart found its truest calling—offering laughter, baked cookies, boundless hugs, and unconditional love.

Lorene will be remembered for her sharp wit, sense of humor, loyalty, and unwavering faith. She leaves behind a family united by her example of kindness and joy.

“As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.” James 5:11
