In Loving Memory of Lorene Ann (Hannasch) Mauro
January 15, 1938 - August 15, 2025
Lorene Ann Mauro passed peacefully into eternal rest on August 15, 2025, surrounded by the family she so fiercely loved. Lori was 87 years old.
Born on January 15, 1938, to Ed and Anna Hannasch, Lorene grew up in Carroll, Iowa, with a heart full of generosity and a spirit that sparkled with humor and devotion. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Duane and Don, her sister Joan Schleisman, and her beloved niece Sandy Williams.
Lorene is survived by her devoted husband and best friend, Don Mauro, with whom she shared a lifetime of love, laughter, and prayers for 67 years. Together, they raised a beautiful family: Sons: Mark (Rocío), Dan (Anna), Ed (Sharilyn), and Jim (Christina); Daughter: Teresa Peacock (Chris), her cherished "bestie"; 14 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren - each of whom she adored and celebrated with unwavering pride.
Lorene's life was a masterclass in selflessness. She always put others first-whether she was cheering from the stands, praying the rosary for her husband's teams, or lovingly working in the cafeteria and bookstore at Dowling Catholic High School as well as with the family insurance enterprise the past 30 years. Her faith was the quiet, steady rhythm of her days.
Lori was a coupon queen, a shop-a-holic with a twinkle in her eye, and a fierce fan of sports - in her early days, Notre Dame and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Most recently, from the Iowa and Iowa State teams to the WNBA's Indiana Fever and Caitlin Clark to the NBA's Indiana Pacers and Tyrese Haliburton, to NFL favorites Brock Purdy and Patrick Mahomes. This past year, she even joined her husband in following the PGA, proving that love-and-curiosity never retire.
Lorene found joy in the simple pleasures: Hallmark movies, game shows, family breakfasts and dinners, and the sacred chaos running through her home. She was deeply involved in the lives of her children and grandchildren, offering wisdom, warmth, and a listening ear. She was a fighter until the end, and her legacy is one of grace, grit, and boundless love.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m., Wednesday, August 20 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church (15 Indianola Road, Des Moines) with the Rosary recited at 7 p.m. Funeral mass will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, August 21 at the church followed immediately by a reception in the Parish Hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the St. Anthony's Catholic Church, honoring Lorene's lifelong compassion and care.
Her family will miss her deeply-but they will carry her spirit in every prayer whispered, every game watched, and every act of kindness shared. Lorene's love was a quiet miracle, and her memory will forever be a blessing.
