Louis Dale Hamrick, a man known for his great wisdom and kindness, passed away peacefully on July 31, 2025, in his hometown of Morgantown, WV. Born on March 3, 1934, Louis's life was one marked by determination, love, and commitment to his country, community, and family.
Louis is survived by his adored wife of 70 years, Barbara Jean Shaffer Hamrick. Together, they nurtured a family that included their sons: Mark Allen Hamrick of Morgantown, Brian David Hamrick (Teresa) of Florence, KY, and Todd Robert Hamrick (Debbie) of Morgantown. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren: Scott Hamrick, Caroline Utzman (Nathan), Aaron Hamrick, Eli Hamrick, and Isaac Hamrick, who will carry on his spirit of generosity and love.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis Hamrick and Jessie Bond Hamrick, and several brothers and sisters whose memories he held close to his heart. He graduated from University High School in 1954. He transitioned into a life of service when he joined the United States Army Special Forces. His dedication to his country was second to none. He became a Green Beret, for more than 30 years, retiring with the rank of Sgt. Major and Jumpmaster.
After his military service, Louis channeled his skills as a trained machinist and leadership abilities into entrepreneurship; he owned and founded multiple businesses, including: Northco, Quality Bit, Tech Engineering, among others. His businesses provided employment to hundreds of people over more than six decades. His work wasn't just a livelihood; it was a testament to his commitment to fostering growth and prosperity in his community.
Besides being a savvy businessman, Louis was an adept instrument rated pilot, soaring above the clouds with the same precision and care that he navigated all aspects of his life. He was an avid runner and skier. He was the rock of the entire family, always there at moment's notice for anyone who needed him for anything, going as far as to raise some family members.
Louis founded an annual event called the "The float trip" in 1968 and it continues every year to this day.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Louis to the Scott's Run Settlement House, 950 Fairchance Rd., Morgantown, WV 26508 or 41 Ladybug Dr., Morgantown, WV 26501. srsh.org
