Louis Angelo Torres, 91, of Flint, Texas passed away peacefully on October 22, 2025, surrounded by family.
Born August 25, 1934, in Manhattan, New York to Anna and Juan Torres. Louis grew up in Queens and Long Island surrounded by a large, extended family. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Religion from Atlantic Union College in 1958. He then completed seminary studies and a Master of Arts in Education at Andrews University in 1964. It was there that he met Dixie, the love of his life. They married on August 12, 1962, beginning a partnership that lasted nearly sixty years.
Louis began teaching at Hall Junior High School before moving to Lincoln, Nebraska, where he served as a teacher and guidance counselor at College View Academy. In 1967, he and Dixie welcomed their daughter, Sheila. He earned a Master's in Social Work from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1970, and began a long career dedicated to improving child welfare services and supporting vulnerable families. He worked with the Nebraska Center on Children and Youth and later held several administrative roles with the Nebraska Department of Social Services before retiring in 2000. Beyond his professional life, Louis used his counseling skills to support organizations including Lincoln Personal Crisis Service and Parents Anonymous. He embodied compassion and service in all he did.
Louis loved fishing and the quiet solitude to be found visiting area lakes. Later, he and Dixie shared a passion for breeding and showing AKC-registered dachshunds, traveling across the country in their RV for dog shows and other outings.
After retirement, Louis and Dixie relocated to the Tyler area in 2002 where he found many new lakes to explore. They enjoyed book clubs, symphony concerts and active involvement in the Unitarian Fellowship of Tyler. A lifelong spiritual seeker, Louis's faith journey eventually led him to the wisdom of Buddhist philosophy.
Louis's devotion to Dixie was unwavering, especially during the long illness preceding her death in March of 2020.
Louis Torres will be remembered for his compassion, thoughtfulness and quiet strength. His kindness touched many lives, and his legacy endures in the hearts of those who loved him. He is survived by his daughter, Sheila Torres-Blank, and son-in-law, Steve Blank of San Marcos,Texas.
