Lowell Baker, affectionately known as “Whispering Lowell,” passed away peacefully on May 3, 2025, at his residence in Busy, Kentucky. He was born on October 14, 1949, in Leslie County, Kentucky. A retired coal miner and a dedicated veteran of the U.S. Army, he lived a life filled with hard work, community engagement, and cherished family moments.
Throughout his lifetime, Lowell was not just a skilled miner but an avid conversationalist who never met a stranger. His warm personality and genuine kindness made him well-liked in his community, where he built lasting friendships and fostered connections. His love for storytelling brought joy to many, as family and friends fondly recall his ability to make everyone feel welcome and valued.
Lowell enjoyed a rich array of hobbies, with a particular passion for fishing and hunting, often using these activities as opportunities to bond with his loved ones. He took pride in being a member of the Lower Grassy Church of Christ at Busy, Kentucky, where his faith and community involvement were integral to his life.
He is survived by two sons, Beecher Dwight Baker and his wife, Shawnee, and Lowell Gregory Baker and his friend, Angel Wallace, one daughter, Mildred Lou “Millie” Baker Begley & husband Tut, brother, Marvin Baker & wife, Shirley and sister, Doshia Baker. Lowell was blessed with a large family, including 17 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews who will remember him fondly.
Lowell has been reunited in passing with his parents, Beecher Baker and Mildred Campbell Baker; his beloved wife, Loretta Stidham Baker; and his siblings, Mark, Don, Jerry, Evelyn, Barb, and Phyllis. Their memories will continue to be a source of comfort for those who knew and loved him.
As we remember Lowell Baker, we celebrate his full and vibrant life, his unwavering spirit, and the indelible mark he left on all those fortunate enough to know him.
Funeral: Friday, May 9, 2025 at 1:00 P.M. at the Dwayne Walker Funeral Home, Hyden, Kentucky
Officiating Minister: Kelly Fields

Interment: Baker Cemetery, Busy, Kentucky
Visitation: Thursday, May 8, 2025 at 7:00-9:00 P.M. at the Funeral Home Chapel
