Lowell F. Wessel, age 93, of Seymour, passed away late Saturday evening, October 4, 2025, at the Lutheran Community Home in Seymour surrounded by his loving family. Lowell was a man of deep faith and a lifelong, devoted member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Wegan. He was baptized in Christ on December 20, 1931, and confirmed in his faith on March 25, 1945, both at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Wegan. Over the years, he faithfully served in various leadership roles at the church and remained a dedicated supporter of the church and its mission. He also instilled in his family the importance of strong faith and regular church attendance, leading by example through his own devotion. Lowell was a graduate of Brownstown High School and graduated from ICS with a diploma in Electrical Engineering. Following his graduation, he served for four years in the United States Air Force, where he was assigned to Electronics Security. He was honorably discharged in 1956 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. Lowell dedicated 46 years of his career to Jackson County REMC, retiring in 1997. During the last 12 years of his tenure there, he served as Operations and Engineering Manager. He was also co-founder of Nehrwess with his wife, Rosalyn, which was established alongside Bob and Ileen Nehrt in 1975. He remained involved with the business until its sale in 2001. Also, during his fulltime employment, he farmed and wired houses and grain bins on the side. Following his retirement, he continued working as an engineering consultant with R.W. Beck, Inc., where he remained until his second retirement in 2010. Restoring Farmall and International Harvester tractors was a true passion for Lowell. It was a hobby that brought him great joy. Over the years, he restored and collected more than 20 red tractors. In accordance, he was a member of the International Harvester Collectors of Indiana, Chapter 7, and he also attended and participated in numerous tractor shows. Lowell's extracurricular activities included over 25 years of service on the Board of the Lutheran Community Home, where he held the position of Vice President. In this role, he was instrumental in overseeing the recent addition of Walnut Manor. Lowell also served as founding chairman of the Lutheran Central School Board, when it was formed, and was a past member of the Brownstown Exchange Club. In his free time, Lowell enjoyed square dancing and woodworking, both hobbies of which reflected his joyous spirit and his craftsmanship. He built several pieces of furniture for his children and grandchildren, which resembled a legacy of his skill and dedication. Lowell also took great pride in his yard. Maintaining a neat, well-manicured lawn was important to him, and he especially loved tending to his roses. Every holiday season, his home became a symbol of festive cheer, as he was well known for his prestigious Christmas light displays, an annual tradition that brought joy to neighbors and passersby alike. Family was of utmost importance to Lowell. He deeply loved and cherished his family, and he especially enjoyed traveling and making memories with his beloved wife. Together, they visited all 50 states, and also took memorable trips to Europe and Germany. Born on December 8, 1931, at his home in Brownstown, Lowell was the son of Fred and Mary (Hehman) Wessel, both of whom preceded him in death. On May 6, 1953, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vallonia, he married the love of his life, Rosalyn Stuckwish, and she survives in Seymour. Survivors also include two daughters: Patty (Roger) Wischmeier of Seymour, and Tammy (David) Martindale of Brownstown; five grandchildren: Jessica (Chris) Bailey of North Vernon, John (Cheyenne) Wischmeier of California, Jordan (Kelli) Wessel of Mitchell, Megan Martindale of Columbus, and Kyle (Caasie) Martindale of Brownstown; great-grandchildren: Braden Bailey, Coltin Bailey, Lexi Wischmeier, Ivey Wischmeier, Shayla Wessel, Gavan Wessel, Wisen Jimenez, Annelle Jimenez, Caysen Robertson, Karlyn Martindale, and Cohen Martindale; sister-in-law, Nancy Stuckwish of Vallonia; and several cousins. Funeral services for Lowell F. Wessel will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Wegan, with Pastor Joel Meyer officiating. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc., Brownstown, and from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Wegan. Interment will follow at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Wegan Cemetery. Military honors will be presented by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1925, American Legion Post 89, Disabled American Veterans 47, and Vietnam Vets 7. Memorials may be given to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Wegan Parsonage Fund, Lutheran Community Home, or Trinity Lutheran High School.
