Lucy Bonomo, age 90, passed away on Thursday, July 18, 2024, at Penn Medicine at Princeton Medical Center in Plainsboro, New Jersey.
Born April 26, 1934, in Jersey City, New Jersey, Lucy was the daughter of the late Richard and Mary (Jerahian) Sahagian. She spent her early years in North Arlington, where she attended North Arlington High School and met the love of her life, Joseph. The high school sweethearts married in 1955 and embarked on a very happy 16 months in Munich, Germany while Joe completed his Army service. They had the time of their lives traveling all over Europe on his leaves. Eventually they settled in Edison, where they built their home and spent over sixty cherished years together.
Lucy was a dedicated scholar who pursued her passion for learning by attending night school for 11 years at Rutgers University, ultimately earning her bachelor's degree in English. Her faith was an integral part of her life, and she actively participated in the Metuchen Assembly of God, teaching the Sunday school and leading a women's bible study. She especially enjoyed women's prison ministry at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center, which she did for 22 years. Known for her kindness and generosity, Lucy found fulfillment in volunteering and touched many lives through her selfless acts.
In her down time, Lucy enjoyed racket ball, eventually transitioning to tennis which she played consistently until she was 78. She had a deep love for gardening and took pride in cultivating a variety of fruits and vegetables, which she skillfully canned and preserved. She loved baking and researching new recipes. Her homemade pies from apple and peach trees, along with jams from raspberry bushes and the huge strawberry patch in their yard, gave her much joy.
Lucy was a devoted mother to her daughters, Lauren Aretakis (Steve) and Lisa Levy, and a cherished grandmother to Stephanie and Teddy Aretakis. She is also survived by her sister, Florence Pagella (Kenneth), and leaves behind many cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Lucy was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Bonomo, who passed away in January, her sister Bertha Keshish, and her brother, Richard Sahagian.
Family and friends may visit on Saturday, July 27, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Gleason Funeral Home, 1360 Hamilton Street, Somerset, NJ 08873. A memorial service will commence at 11:30 AM at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Lucy's memory may be made to the Life Choices Resource Center at www.lifechoicesrc.com/donate or to a local food bank or pantry.
