Lucy Denning Obituary
Born in Wilmington, DE on November 14, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Antonio and Michelina (Ucciferri) Barone. A Wilmington High School graduate, she also worked in the family grocery store during school years. She became a highly skilled secretary and was employed for over 23 years, mostly with the DuPont company, working in both the downtown Wilmington and Chestnut Run locations.
At age 40, she married John J. Denning, a match made in heaven, and had a daughter Elaine J. Denning, now of Kensington, MD. This tight trio lived in the sweet Penn Acres development, within blocks of other Barone family members.
Lucy was driven by faith in God and a love of family, and was a person of immense strength. She became a CCD teacher at Our Lady of Fatima parish, and later volunteered in the school library for 10 years. She was an avid reader and the Barone family historian. She sang beautifully and was in the church choir, and her love of opera and musicals was shared with many. Though a reserved person, she moved fast, and loved a brisk walk, dancing, and getting things done. In her later years, she was honored at beautiful birthday parties given by family members, and delighted in the family pets.
In addition to her parents, Lucy was preceded in death by her husband John and her nine siblings. Her legacy is raising her daughter, as well as nieces and nephews, creating strong bonds that last a lifetime. She will be deeply missed by her daughter Elaine, nieces Ruth Ann, Barbara and Joan, and nephews Andrew, Christopher and Ronald, among many others. We are eternally blessed and grateful for having her with us for so long.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Friday, June 2, 2023, at Our Lady of Fatima R.C. Church, 801 North DuPont Highway, New Castle, DE, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 am. Interment will follow in Cathedral Cemetery, 2400 Lancaster Avenue, Wilmington, DE.
