Obituary published on Legacy.com by Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes - Durand Chapel on Feb. 27, 2025.
Lucy Theresa Hamann (Babiak), age 71 of Durand, formerly of Warren, MI passed away peacefully with her husband, James, and her daughter, Jessica, by her side. She bravely battled cancer with Dr. Morris at Karmanos in Detroit for almost twenty years with James taking her to every single appointment as he would remain by her side through it all. She was called home by her dad, Leo, who predeceased her in 1976, her sister, Charlotte, who predeceased her in 1995, her mom, Stella, who predeceased her in 2017, and her brother, Richard, who predeceased her in 2018.
Lucy was born on November 7, 1953 to Polish immigrants who survived WWII. Lucy served as a first generation American in the family- being the first one to be born in the USA.
She was a devoted and loving wife of over 50 years to James, as they were married on October 18, 1974. A supportive and loving mom to her only child, Jessica Erin; however, Lucy welcomed her son-in-law, Jay, as one of her own. A caring, active, and loving grandma to Joshua Alexander and Jenna Charlotte was what made her most proud. She had two grandpups who she was exceptionally fond of as well: Norman, and Nellie. She also had several nieces and nephews who she loved.
Lucy was a hairdresser by trade and retired in 2018 after over 40 years. She and James bought their forever home in Durand where they retired and lived the small town American life for the first time in their lives. Lucy designed a beautiful new kitchen and bathroom for their home that they enjoyed for years.
What Lucy enjoyed most was being present in her grandchildren's lives. She attended their band concerts, their softball, baseball, basketball, and volleyball games. She beamed with pride when she watched both grandchildren earn their black belts in Taekwondo.
Furthermore, she enjoyed camping in her travel trailer for decades. She was also quite the cook and baker who enjoyed making pierogi with her son-in-law, Jay, her granddaughter, Jenna, and her daughter, Jessica. The Polish recipes and traditions will continue to be passed down through the generations.
Additionally, she enjoyed playing cards, Scrabble, Yahtzee, Solitaire, Sudoku, watching Jeopardy, collecting Polish pottery, and she had a newfound love and interest in reading thriller fiction books.
Her positive outlook on life, her kindness, her sense of humor, her generosity, and her contagious smile and laugh is what we'll always remember. Her life and legacy will live in all of us. Her famous phrase to her family in text messages throughout the years was: "Have a good night and a better tomorrow."
