Lucy Catherine Hershel of Fort Smith, Arkansas, was born June 17,1931 to the parentage of the late Thomas Johnson and Marie Catherine Johnson. She was one of twelve children, and at the age of 92, she was the last of her generation.
Lucy was educated in the Fort Smith School District, graduating from Lincoln High School. In 1951, she married Raymond Hershel until his passing, January 1977. Together they raised five children. Lucy accepted Christ at an early age and joined Ninth Street Missionary Baptist Church where she remained active, until her heath failed. Lucy loved the Lord and loved going to church. When she attended church or any other event, she was known as a chic fashionista as every outfit had to match from hat, purse to shoes. If you asked Lucy, she would say her greatest accomplishment was becoming a mother to her five children and raising her granddaughter, Chandra Terrel, as if she was her own.
Lucy ruled with a loving iron fist and was not the type of parent that believed in time outs. On many occasions, she sacrificed her happiness for the goodwill of her children and loved ones. Lucy was an avid Dallas Cowboys football fan. She believed in the silver and blue even when they had a losing season. She also loved the LA Lakers and was a fan of the late Kobe Bryant. She attended several games to support her teams. But her real entertainment came from the many marathons of dominos, bid whisk, and spades. The more her opponents bragged and trashed talked, the sweeter her victory.
Prayerfully, she was greeted at heaven's gate by her son: Raymond Hershel and daughter: Elaine Hershel. On Friday, October 20, 2023, Lucy peacefully entered eternal rest when she answered the master's call and transitioned from labor to reward. Our mother and grandmother, Lucy, will continue to live in our hearts.
She leaves to cherish her memories: her sons: Raymond Hershel (deceased), Derrick Hershel (Rona) of El Paseo, TX and daughters: Linda Moore (Percy) of Kansas City, KS, and Elaine Hershel (deceased) and son: Gregory Hershel (DeeDra), Fort Smith, AR, 25 grandchildren, a host of great-grandchildren along with a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at Ninth Street Baptist Church, Fort Smith, AR, with Pastor Wesley Hooks officiating. Interment will be at Oak Cemetery in Fort Smith, AR. Pallbearers will be Gregory Grice Jr., James Earl McDade, Jermaine Diaz, Percy Moore, Terry Moss Jr., and Tracy Releford. Honorary pallbearers will be Keynan Grice and Terry Moss Sr.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 27, 2023 at Lewis Funeral Chapel in Fort Smith, AR.
