Lucy Schultz Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Nov. 27, 2009.
SCHULTZ, Lucy Jeffries Wilson, 70, of Virginia Beach, died Saturday, November 21, 2009 at Sentara VA Beach General Hospital. She was born in Hopewell, Va. August 23, 1939, the youngest of four daughters born to the late Dr. Edward Ashlin Wilson and Ruth Garland Wilson. Lucy is survived by her oldest sister, Jean Garland Wilson Micklem and her husband, James Trahern Micklem, of Richmond, Va.; nieces, Suzanne Jeffries East Carr of Richmond, Ruth Garland Micklem and her partner, Kristi Van Audenhove, of White Stone, Va.; nephews, James Trahern Micklem Jr. of Hopewell and John Jeffries Lisanick of Fairfax; and a brother-in-law, John James Lisanick of Alexandria. Also surviving are three great-nieces, Suzanne Ashlin Shepherd, Elizabeth Garland Shepherd and Samantha Garland Carr; stepniece and nephew, Briana and Michael Van Audenhove; and great-great-niece and nephews, Liliana, Oliver and James. Lucy was preceded in death by sisters, Sarah "Sally" McLean Wilson Lisanick and Elizabeth "Betsy" Warner Wilson East. Lucy graduated from Longwood College in 1961. Lucy began and embraced her teaching career in the Petersburg public schools when the Petersburg School Board was required by court order to integrate its professional staff. Two years later she began employment with the Virginia Beach school division. She subsequently attended graduate school at the University of Virginia, where she obtained certification to serve as a Visiting Teacher (School Social Worker) in Virginia public schools. It was in this capacity that she served until her retirement from the Virginia Beach school system in 2000. Lucy possessed an engaging personality and had a vivacious zest for life. From her childhood in Hopewell, she enjoyed a group of friends who joined her each summer at the family cottage in White Stone Beach. This tradition has continued since the days of their adolescence. In addition to these very special friends, she leaves a host of dear friends in the Virginia Beach area and in the Northern Neck. It can be said that wherever Lucy lived, worked or traveled, she had the capacity to develop many close and lasting relationships. A memorial service to celebrate Lucy's life will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, 505 Cedar Lane in Hopewell, on Saturday, December 12, 2009 at 11 a.m. Memorials in her honor may be made to a charity of your choice.

Lucy lived in the townhouse next door to mine on Benjamin Harrison. I don't live there; I am the landlord and there have been at least 6 tenants that Lucy has known. SHe made me laugh because it was as though she helped me pick out tenants. Lucy was very particular!
She was such a good neighbor and she always looked out for me and the people who lived next door or in the neighborhood. Lucy would let me know if my roof needed fixing or if I wanted to go in together on fixing our fence. I will miss her. My tenant, Pat Green, just called me tonight. I know she was saddened as well.
She was a great lady who will be sorely missed.
