Obituary published on Legacy.com by Castillo Funeral Home on Feb. 3, 2026.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Luis Garcia Lopez who entered eternal rest at the age of 94, on January 30, 2026, at his home in
San Antonio, Texas surrounded by his family.
Dad was born on May 15, 1931, in Zacatecas, Mexico. He began working in the fields at the early age of 7, to help his parents support their family of 8. As an adventurous young boy, he was often reading, drawing or exploring his surroundings.
At the age of 14, Dad met the love of his life, Margarita Olivares, at a park in Monterrey, Mexico. According to Dad, it was literally love at first sight! Mom and Dad were married on May 5, 1957 (Cinco de Mayo!) and were soulmates for 61 years until mom's passing on August 5th, 2018.
After their marriage mom and dad moved from Mexico to
San Antonio, Texas to begin their lives as husband and wife. Mom was a full-time housewife while dad became a skilled welder. Our parents were always quite busy raising 9 children but managed to direct them to be successful in their careers with many fond and cherished memories together on Cordelia Street.
Dad was a cancer survivor and along with my mom they were huge supporters of the St. Judes Children's Research Hospital. He also had a lot of faith in God and church which gave him a source of strength and comfort.
Dad never stopped working even after retirement; he continued welding and enjoyed tinkering and working on small side projects as well.
In retirement, dad also enjoyed visiting the library, where he taught himself to use the computer and iPad. Dad enjoyed walking and exercising but especially loved cooking. He loved travelling, he had the opportunity to visit Virginia, Oklahoma, North Carolina, Arizona, New Mexico, Maryland, Louisiana, California and several cities within Texas. He even made it to the White House!
Dad is survived by his children, Louie (Rosie), Yolanda (Steven), Roger (Lorraine), Rick, Frank (Maria RIP), Carmen, Sylvia (Raymond) and Rosita (LeRoy). He is also survived by his brother, Salvador Lopez of Dallas, Texas and his sister Soledad Montoya of
San Antonio, TX as well as 19 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margarita Olivares Lopez, his parents, Sostenes and Serafina Lopez as well as his son Marcos, granddaughter, Jemima, and grandson Owen.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Sacred Mission Hospice. For their compassion, dedication, and exceptional care during dad's final days. Their kindness brought comfort and peace to our family during this most difficult time.
Dad, you will be missed beyond words, though our hearts ache in your absence, we rejoice in knowing you are now at peace. The love you gave and the memories you created will forever live within us.
