Luna Yordy, the sweet 14-year-old Catahoula Leopard girl of Craig and Rebecca Yordy, of Greenfield, Indiana, passed over the Rainbow Bridge at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 16, 2025.
One of Craig and Rebecca's friends had a litter of puppies that were born on Tuesday, February 22, 2011, and Luna was among them. Luna was purchased by another person to be used as a breeder dog. After having her for nearly a year, the buyer decided they no longer wanted her and returned her to Craig and Rebecca's friend.
When Rebecca heard the background story and saw a photo of this little pup who had been shuffled around, she knew she had to meet her. Rebecca said she immediately fell in love with this beautiful little furry ball of energy.
Her official adoption day was on Saturday, July 21, 2012, the day she was able to come home and join her family, who loved her so very much and would never under any circumstances return her.
Rebecca described Luna's personality as "our silly, wild companion and fearless protector who lived for adventure." Rebecca lovingly continued, "She loved car rides, exploring new places, drive-thru treats, belly rubs, and butt scratches on our laps. She would give unlimited kisses when we were sad and wanted endless hikes and car rides. She never met an animal or human she didn't like or lick. And she loved her human companions unconditionally." Her energy and curiosity were unmatched. She was a funny girl, but she would be on alert and guard her humans at all costs, at all times.
Rebecca shared that they adopted Luna first. When they adopted Ziva, she was in such rough shape. Luna loved Ziva and treated her as if she were her very own pup. She continued treating Ziva that way until Ziva came to the end of her life's journey and her memory started slipping away from her. Rebecca relayed how Luna was even bitten once while trying to protect Ziva, adding, "She was fearless, and she walked away brave and unshaken, knowing she had protected her family."
Rebecca shared some of her favorite memories of Luna, adding that there were so many "amazing memories with my girl."
"Her zoomies through the house and across all the furniture, even tipping over the couch a few times," and "watching her kick and yip in her sleep as she would run and chase in her dreams."
Rebecca shared how Craig had to teach her how to bark at the door knocks: "She was such a quiet girl. She would hold in her barks until we let her outside by herself, then she would bark until we came outside to join her in her backyard adventures." Rebecca continued "She would sit, shake, and lie for treats."
Rebecca recalled how Luna was often too strong for her to walk her by herself; once, she took off unexpectedly to chase a rabbit while they were out for a short hike, and Rebecca went flying. Luna dragged her by the leash all the way down a snowy hill. They both came back to the house happy and covered in snow; only one was a little sore. Luna loved snow and cold weather; it was her favorite time to explore. Luna loved meeting new people. Luna once jumped a gate to hop on Craig and Rebecca's cousin's lap, whom she had never met, to give kisses. They had to bribe her with biscuits and walks to let him go.
Rebecca recalled how Luna absolutely loved going on car rides with her family. She would stand against the door, hanging her whole head out of the window; her nose would sniff the air a mile a minute. Luna's lips and her drool would be flapping in the wind.
Whenever Luna heard the words "car ride," she would immediately run to the door, her tail would wag in anticipation.
If Craig and Rebecca didn't head to the car fast enough, she would run back to them, circling them like a shark until they walked towards the door.
Craig and Rebecca would purposely drive down country roads so they could pass the animal farms, slowing down as they would pass so that Luna could get a good sniff of the farm country air.
She even enjoyed trips to the doctor, because that meant she got two car rides in one day with a drive-thru treat on the way home.
Rebecca shared that they gave her the name Luna the day they brought her home; her eyes were the inspiration for her name. Craig and Rebecca often called her "Lun-y toons" because of her silly demeanor and "Luna Lovegood" after a favorite "flighty" movie character, and Craig would often call her "Lunar-Lander" because her energy was out of this world.
What they felt Luna valued the most in her life, besides cheeseburgers and chicken nuggets, was companionship, adventure, and belly rubs. Before her human sister was born, they spent their weekends hiking and finding new places to explore. She loved to sniff and track new scents. Everywhere they would go, she would guard and protect Rebecca with warning growls from everything she perceived as a threat: an animal in the distance, the garbage truck, a human walking by, or even a plastic bag that had blown into the yard. When the family wasn't hiking, they were either playing or snuggled up on the couch with Luna for some belly rubs and snacks.
Luna wasn't a picky girl when it came to food. She would eat most things you gave her, whether it was meat or sweet. If we gave her a vegetable or a fruit, she would spit it out and stare at us until we gave her a meaty treat instead. Her favorite treats were McDonald's chicken nuggets. She loved having a fresh bone nearby to chomp on.
Since Luna was a big 70-pound girl, it took both Craig and Rebecca to bathe her. She would hesitate to get in the bath, but once she was in it, she loved the soapy scratches. Luna did look forward to being brushed. If Rebecca finished brushing Luna before Luna wanted her to, Luna would put her paw on the brush to ask for more brushing, or she would pull Rebecca's hand back to her with her paw for more scratches.
Luna wouldn't let them dry her with a towel until she had a good shake to try to get the water off herself, even if that meant getting water all over them and the room. After every bath when she was younger, she would get the zoomies and start running through the house, jumping off of furniture, and eventually calming down if you offered a biscuit. Her favorite baths as she got older were outside hose baths during the summer because she could take her time basking in the sunshine to dry.
Luna's favorite "toy" was her fur companion, Ziva. On the days when Ziva didn't want to play, she would choose any toy she could play tug-of-war with. Her favorite object was her pillow; it was her safe place.
Luna, as a young pup, also competed with the cat to catch the red dot from the laser pointer. She liked rough play but was gentle enough to know when to stop, most of the time.
She would play chase with both humans and animals. She liked to play "peek-a-boo" around corners so she could creep closer and closer until she "found" Rebecca.
Luna enjoyed the outdoors so much. She loved exploring new places; with every sniff, she found joy hiking with her humans but insisted on being carried back to the car for the last 20 feet of every trip.
She loved the beach; she would bark, alerting danger every time Rebecca went into the water alone.
She loved going for neighborhood walks but would try to poop on concrete driveways instead of curbside grass.
Craig would take her jogging every few days, and they would enjoy every run until she would abruptly stop to sniff a new scent, causing Craig to tumble forward. But Craig was very patient with her and let her get her fill of scents before continuing on their jog.
But mostly she just loved being with us, especially as she aged and her energy slowed down. Whether we were on an adventure, in the car, on the couch, or just relaxing out back, she loved being next to us.
Luna loved both of her humans, but Rebecca was not only her human mama but also her best friend. Everywhere they would go, she would guard and protect Rebecca with warning growls from everything she perceived as a threat: an animal in the distance, the garbage truck, a human walking by, or even a plastic bag that had blown into the yard. When they weren't hiking, they were either playing or snuggled up on the couch with some belly rubs and snacks. They went everywhere together, even to the bathroom. Luna guarded and protected Rebecca when Craig wasn't home, and Luna would snuggle with Rebecca all day if Rebecca would have let her. If she saw Rebecca crying, she would lick her face from chin to brow until she heard her laughter.
As Luna's body aged, so did her mind. She often looked to her younger fur sister, Ziva, for guidance as to when to be excited, when to go outside and potty, and where to walk. After Ziva passed, Luna seemed lost. Looking for Ziva around the house, not knowing where things were, relying on muscle memory for daily routines. Eventually she lost mobility from the waist back and had to be carried by Craig everywhere. She seemed to forget everything, including her surroundings, but when she locked eyes with Craig and Rebecca, her face would light up, as if seeing them brought everything back to her. Even though they knew it was her time to go, they are still so broken without her.
Craig did everything humanly possible to help Luna, and Luna fought valiantly to the very end to stay with her family, lovingly snuggling with them until she passed over the Rainbow Bridge.
Luna brought so much joy and happiness to the entire family and will be missed immensely by her human parents, Craig and Rebecca, and her 8-month-old human sister, Lydia. Luna was greeted on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge by her fur sister, Ziva, who preceded her in death this past January. Arrangements have been entrusted to Always & Furever in Our Hearts Pet Cremation in association with Liming Family Funeral Home, located in Shirley, Indiana.
