Today, we gather in loving memory and with hearts full of gratitude to celebrate the life of a remarkable woman, Luz Mendiola Mate, affectionately known to us all as Luz ("Lucing"). Married to Uldarico E. Mate (deceased)- former Mayor of Tacloban City.
Born on the 9th of September, 1931, in Tacloban City, Leyte, she was a beacon of light that shone brightly until her peaceful passing on the 18th of January, 2025, in
San Antonio, Texas. Luz's life was a testament to her unwavering faith, her passionate service to the community, and the boundless love she held for her family and friends. Luz was a woman of exceptional intellect and achievement. With a Bachelor of Science, Major in English, and Bachelor of Laws, LLB- Cum Laude, at St. Paul's College, she set a formidable foundation for her future.
Her professional journey as a Manager at the Development Bank of the Philippines, Tacloban City, was marked by dedication and excellence, as she guided many towards prosperity and growth. Beyond her professional life, Luz was deeply committed to her civic duties and was a pillar in numerous organizations. She served with distinction as the First Lady of the City of Tacloban (1988-1998), President of Tacloban Maternity Hospital, President of Lioness Club-Tacloban City, and was an active member of the Christian Family Movement, Cando Club, BCBP, Zonta, and Catholic Women's League.
Her devotion to the Sto Niño Church was profound, and her faith was the compass that directed her path. Luz's interests were as varied as they were spirited. She was an ardent environmentalist who championed the Clean & Green Project of Tacloban City, ensuring that the beauty of God's creation was preserved for future generations. As the team captain of her bowling team at DBP, she led with both grace and a competitive spirit. Luz also found joy in the rhythms of life, whether it was dancing to a beloved tune or singing from her heart. In every aspect, she was the embodiment of a life well-lived.
Her family was the cornerstone of her world. Her beloved children: Yoly Moy(+), (married to Bob Moy), Naida Battad (married to Venie Battad), Nancy Martinez (married to Boy Martinez(+), Butchoy Mate(+) (married to Josephine Ramos), Cecilia Mate(+), Bambie Genco (married to Vinny Genco), Ricky Mate, Tikoy Mate, Bong-Bong Mate(+), (married to Mai-Mai Gonzales), Chinky Tibe (married to Concon Tibe), and Sarah Lopez (married to Henry Lopez). In the words of the Apostle Paul, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." (2 Timothy 4:7). Luz embodied this scripture in every aspect of her life, as she fought for justice, ran her race with perseverance, and her faith never wavered. As we bid farewell to Luz Mendiola Mate, let us not dwell on our loss but celebrate the legacy she leaves behind. Let us carry forward the light of her spirit in acts of kindness, in unwavering faith, and in the pursuit of a life filled with courage, faithfulness, purpose and joy.
Luz may have departed from our sight, but her light will continue to shine in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. We commend her soul to the Lord, trusting that she has found eternal rest in the arms of our Heavenly Father. May the memories of her love, her laughter, and her unwavering commitment to her family and community continue to inspire us all. Farewell, dear Nanay Luz, until we meet again.
