Lyman “Phillip” Griner, 74, entered into rest on Friday, August 2, 2024.

Phillip was born on March 18, 1950, in Nashville, Georgia. He graduated from Northside High School in Warner Robins and went on to attend and graduate from the University of Georgia. After earning his bachelor’s degree, he worked in banking for 30+ years, culminating in his role as branch manager for Synovus. A very active and physically fit man, Phillip held track records and played football at Northside High, boxed with the prestigious Golden Gloves, and coached baseball and football with the Rec Department for several years, including his son’s teams.

Phillip was a major history buff and loved to share this passion with his family by taking them on many trips throughout the years, particularly to historical battlefields. This also contributed to him learning about his own history; he was a Salzburger in the Georgia Salzburger Society, which was very important to him. Phillip was a member of SCV and International Civitan, offering his time and service to each. In his free time, he enjoyed a variety of interesting hobbies. He loved Ford Mustangs and enjoyed NASCAR, having the rare opportunity to be on Bill Elliott’s pit crew for one race. He also enjoyed playing guitar, which he also taught to his son.

Phillip's long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease never dimmed his spirit. He was known for being the funniest man in the room and his dry sense of humor was a source of joy and comfort to those around him, highlighting his resilience and character. Phillip will be deeply missed by his family and friends, who will forever cherish his memory.

His parents, Lyman S. Griner and Annette Dorminey Griner, preceded him in death.

His memory will forever be treasured by his wife of 52 years, Janet Elkins Griner; children, Wade Phillip Griner (Andrea), and Kellie Griner Hibbitts (Jeff); grandchildren, Grayson Gould, Ila Gould, Maya Gould, Avery Hibbitts, Helena Griner, and Anderson Hibbits; aunt, Glenda Collins along with Doris Griner and many other loving family members and friends.

Visitation will be Monday, August 5, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A funeral service will immediately follow at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. Afterward, Phillip will be laid to rest in Magnolia Park Cemetery.

The family would like to thank Pruitt Health Hospice and Visiting Angels for their special love and care for Phillip.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial donations be given in memory of Phillip Griner to The Parkinson’s Foundation at https://www.parkinson.org/.
