Charles Smith, III of San Antonio, TX passed away on February 21, 2026. He was born on November 14, 1940, in Englewood, NJ to Florence and Charles Smith Jr. He graduated from the University of Georgia. He then entered the military and was commissioned 2nd lieutenant. During his 20-year career in the Air Force, he was stationed at several Air Force Bases, including Randolph AFB and McClellan AFB, and retired as a lieutenant colonel.
He was a devoted husband, loving father, and cherished grandfather and will be greatly missed. His other passion was golf. He played golf courses all over the world and had great fun with friends in his Silverhorn golf league.
He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Joan, his stepson, Randy (Christy) Smidt, his sister, Margaret McLaughlin, grandchildren, Dan C. Smidt and Ben Smidt, nephew, Michael (Kristine) McLaughlin, and nieces, Patricia (Joe) Elam and Susan (Michael) Gentry. He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepson, Dan B. Smidt, and his brother-in-law, Richard McLaughlin.
A service will be held on Friday, March 20, 2026, at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd. at 1:15 pm.
