M.E. Harrell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Lunn's Colonial Funeral Home - Wichita Falls on May 30, 2025.
Dr. M.E. Harrell, lovingly known as "Gene" and "Pops" passed away on May 26, 2025, following a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. He will forever be cherished as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, whose unwavering faith in Jesus Christ and heartfelt interest in others left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
Gene was born on November 17, 1941, to Albert and Ruby Harrell in Wichita Falls, Texas. He attended Baylor University for three years before earning his Doctorate of Dentistry from the University of Texas in Houston.
Shortly after graduation, Gene moved to Wichita Falls, Texas, where he established a successful dental practice based on skill, integrity, and compassion that served the community for decades.
Gene married Debby, and together they built a beautiful life rooted in faith, family, and service. As active members of First Baptist Church, they shared a commitment to their faith community. Gene also dedicated his time and talents to the Boards of Faith Mission and Hospice of Wichita Falls.
Whether making chocolate chip waffles for his beloved grandchildren, enjoying the serenity of Lake Nocona, or embracing the beauty of Crested Butte, Colorado, Gene cherished the moments spent with his family and friends. An avid outdoorsman, he relished hunting, fishing, golf, and gardening.
Gene's legacy is carried on by his wife of over 50 years, Debby; their children Lana Parker (Jeff); Mark (Diane); Janeé Hill (Randy); his grandchildren Eric and Evan Parker (Sarah), Ethan, Sam and Ellie, and RH, Miranda, Macie and Maggie Hill; and great-granddaughter Emma.
Gene's life was an example of faith, love, encouragement, and integrity. He truly was a man after God's own heart.
A celebration of Gene's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 6th at First Baptist Church, Wichita Falls, Texas. The family will receive friends prior to the service at a visitation from 1:00 p.m. until service time in the main hall of First Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Faith Mission, which provides faith-based support for the homeless and addicted, or Hospice of Wichita Falls.

I'll never forget my first day at Baylor in 1960! I remember Gene having all the gathered floormates at newly opened Penland Hall and how Gene had the whole group literally ROFL as he told stories of his time as a chicken judge at the State Fair and the things he had to do. We called him "Chickie" for years after that. What a great roomate for years and I have no doubt he will be missed as a great person, dentist, family member, friend, and anything else he did.

While Gene and I were not close friends, I went to him for many years as my dentist and we played some golf together. I always enjoyed being around him and visiting with him and thought he was one of the really good guys. In addition to being a terrific dentist.

I am sad to hear this news. And I am sorry for the huge hole in your hearts that Gene leaves.

Prayers to the family. He was a wonderful man. He was my dentist forever until he retired, and he was the best. Always enjoyed visiting with him. Our common conversation of Nocona where I lived. Rest in Peace Dr. Harrell
